Giantpanda4,

Given the suspicious nature of the markings and how the real NO. S-15043 would be a great find and potentially valuable gun, I would be real careful of this one. I would guess someone chose that serial number for a reason and every reason I can think of would be bad for an uninformed buyer. I do not mean to infer anything against the current owner because it is not being represented as an early Savage Thompson or (over) priced as a rare Thompson. I too noticed this Thompson right off (because of the serial number) and wondered about the "reasonable price." It has been for sale for quite some time. If possible, it may be worth attempting to trace back the history of this particular Thompson. The current owner should know where he obtained it (and when) and could get you started in the right direction. I would also check it very carefully for re-watting - not that a re-wat is bad, but it is something you certainly would want to know up front. If the only thing that has been done to it is the restamping of some of the numbers, you may have just found a great shooter at a great price. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Tom

Thanks for the advice guys.

I have been assured this is not a welded up gun. We all know the s/n was modified, seller says ay least 20 years ago. It was reparked then. He sold it a long time ago, and is now "out of the business". But then the previous buyer wanted to sell this gun, so the seller bought it back. No he wants to sell it again... so goes the story.

Price ended up at $12.5K. Hopefully it will be as described, and in about 4 months or so I will finally get it! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Patience.....
