M60 - When feed cam return springs go bad...

Recommended Posts

I thought those here might find it interesting to see a picture of a bad topcover feed cam return spring.

Typically, they do not totally snap - instead, they crack making the return slow/weak - and gun just starts to misfeed...

Notice the very small crack at the top of the 2nd picture.

Never touched anything in the top cover, never needed to.

That statement should jinx my ass but good, I look for it to fall apart at the next shoot.

OK, sounds like you are in the run it til fails camp...

FWIW, feed pawl, topcover pawl, & return spring are wear items...

Guess I need to go shopping. Springs are readily available, pawls not so much although Desert Ord can probably fix me up if I can't find them elsewhere. Just to clarify, the parts list in TM9-1005-224-29 doesn't show a "top cover pawl." Are you referring to the pawl in the feed tray or something else? I just happen to have a complete spare feed tray assy.

It is the little spring-loaded gizmo with fingers that grabs the belt and advances it.

They are pretty widely avail at the common places...

e.g.

Here is a topcover feed pawl on GB so you know what you are looking for:

Aaron has them, too.

The other is the feed tray pawl that prevents belt from slipping backwards

also very common
