U.S.M.C. WWII Reising Submachine Gun Instructional Filmstrip

All,

I recently acquired 5 WWII era USMC filmstrips, one of which is "TFS-1," covering the Reising Submachine Gun. While this filmstrip has obviously existed for about 68 years, I don't believe it's been seen by anyone recently. It has 56 frames, and I've made a watermarked pdf file of the filmstrip available for download here. It's a 5 MB file. The pdf has a white line through the middle of it, which seems to be a product of the software I used to convert it, and all frames are watermarked with my name, and the website name. I'm doing this because I don't want someone to just pick it up and start selling it as their own. I scanned each frame in at 1200 dpi, and I think you will be happy with many of the unique images of the Reising in use by Marines contained within.

Incidentally, many of the pictures in this filmstrip document use of the Reising sling with the extra space for a forward keeper in front of the snap. That sling dates this filmstrip to after August, 1943. It also shows that the leather BAR/Thompson spare parts pouch was used for the Reising.

Somewhere, someone may have a phonographic record with the sound for this filmstrip. I'm thinking maybe the National Archives, or maybe someone in the surplus business, or they may be in an attic or basement. Hopefully they didn't all end up in a landfill. It will be something to keep an eye out for, because it would be great to be able to mate the images with their sound again. In the meantime, I'm sure you can use your imagination.

This is very cool stuff, and I hope all will enjoy. I have also completed digitizing an M1 Carbine nomenclature filmstrip, which I will post soon on the M1/M2 Board here at Machinegunboards.com. We all paid for the production of these filmstrips years ago, and I'm happy to make them available again. The other filmstrips I have, which are not yet digitized, cover the "Care and Cleaning of the M1" Garand, "Replacing the Firing Pin - U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M1," and "U.S" Anti-Personnel Mines."

Your thoughts on the content of the Reising filmstrip are appreciated. I will probably pin this post at the top of the board after a while.

Great stuff, Dave. A very historical item and one that would have been lost to history but for your efforts. Thanks for saving it and making it available to the rest of us.

I thought it was interesting that the enlisted Marines are all seen wearing M1923 cartridge belts for the .30 rifles, while shooting a .45 ACP SMG. No sign of the elusive Reising web magazine pouches.

Very cool ! Do you have the text material that goes with the images ?

anticus,

Thanks! No, I'd like to find whatever verbiage, or sound that accompanied the filmstrip. I have a feeling it was a phonographic record. Keep your eyes peeled!

Thank You, from a new member. Great historical find.

This is a very informative site. Appreciate the vast amount of info available here.

I don't yet have a Reising SMG, I have a model 65 .22 that my father-in-law gave me many years ago. It was his first rifle, he bought it as a teenager in the early forties. Should this gun be added to your database?

Thanks again,

Mike

Mike,

Thanks for your kind words. Information and valuable discussion is what it's all about.

I added the serial number that you mentioned in another post about your rifle, as well as the stock and buttplate assembly number information to my database of Reising Model 65's. I have 86 examples documented so far in the Reising .22 Rifle series.

Thanks!

Thanks for sharing!

That is a very informative set of images.

It is always interesting to see the uniforms & kit in actual use.

Here is another good site that has turned up some WWII "Gems"..

I tried searching for the Reising hoping that they had the audio track, but no luck.

There are plenty of WWII training films, documents & manuals to be viewed or downloaded on that site for free.
