johnson184
Anyone ever heard of HR Guns produced MG42s? Are they post WW2 American made copies? It's priced about 30% less than C&R eligible German MG42s, but I'm thinking it may not be worth it if it's a copy.
DZelenka
It has a WWII serial number and manufacturer stamp. In all likelihood, it is a rewat. I recently examined a Mauser MG 42 that was papered correctly with WWII sn and a Form 4 that only referenced Germany and Mauser as its maker. Close examination indicated that only the rear receiver section was German. Everything else, including the front of the receiver was Yugo. It had been built by Collector's Corner in early 1986. Collector's Corner was a predecessor of Ohio Ordnance Works. Bob Landies said he had done a number of them from MG42 receiver rears. At least the one you are looking at seems to have the front half of a WWII receiver to go along with the serial numbered rear. I passed on a deal to purchase the one I was looking at for $25K. I would look at this gun very carefully to see how it was constructed. Was it a simple rewat or is it a receiver built from welded together pieces. Try to find the original builder. Black River Militaria CII
The guns that Landies papered are highly unusual. I am familiar with these remans. Having seen hundreds of MG42s over many, many years, those are the only ones that have been remanufactured in that fashion. By all means, look over the gun very carefully, inside and outside, for any signs of a welded seam, which is impossible to hide. If the ID in the importer/manufacturer box of the current registrant's form is noted as HR Then it is likely a reman and registered post-'68 Amnesty. It also could have been imported by an "HR" prior to the end of the Amnesty which would then be appropriate for the HR to be in that box. If it is a reactivated registered DEWAT, then the M/I box should note origin as German, WWII, or any other identifier that means it is of German and WWII vintage. Reactivation does not change the ID of original registration. As to your question suggesting that HR is an American manufacturer of MG42s, the answer is that no American MG42s were ever manufactured. If you want some help in assessment of the gun send me some good, legible pictures of the gun, preferably taken outdoors.
