LIONHART
MOORE HYPOCRISY We've come to expect certain things from Michael Moore, the deliriously anti-gun millionaire posing as populist who brought us such absurd and irresponsible works as "Bowling for Columbine," "Stupid White Men", "Dude, Where's My Country?" and "Fahrenheit 9/11." We've come to expect patronizing arrogance, blatant anti-Americanism, and flagrant lies. And now, we can add extreme hypocrisy to the list of expectations. A man identified by Fox News as a bodyguard who has been employed by Moore was arrested this week for carrying an unlicensed firearm in New York's JFK airport. The bodyguard faced arraignment on a felony charge of criminal possession of a weapon. Moore, who in an interview last year with Playboy magazine, called the NRA a "radical, freaky group," couldn't be more outspoken in his anti-gun rhetoric. Yet he has no problem whatsoever with employing armed bodyguards. Much like his contemporary, Rosie O'Donnell, Moore's fervently held, and frequently bellowed, gun-control beliefs apparently don't apply to himself. Based on empirical evidence, this double standard is the height of hypocrisy. BLOOMBERG PULLS THE TRIGGER ON FIREARM DEALERS AND MANUFACTURERS Inanimate objects continue to plague New York City, according to Mayor Michael Bloomberg ®. Rather than focusing on the criminals themselves, the Mayor this week signed into law sweeping legislation that holds gun makers and gun dealers liable for injuries and death caused by the criminal use of their products. Under this new provision, lawful manufacturers and business owners will be the ones held accountable for the actions of criminals. Said Bloomberg: "There's no argument here. Guns kill people, it's time to get them off the streets." City Council Speaker Gifford Miller called the law an "important and historic step" that will send a powerful message to the gun industry. The flawed logic and political grandstanding demonstrated by Bloomberg and Miller serve as yet another example of the pervasive anti-gun agenda that threatens our Second Amendment rights. That's why NRA members must let their voices be heard. Please continue to contact your U.S. Senators in support of the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act"--legislation to halt these reckless lawsuits. This bill passed in the House last year, and had majority support in the U.S. Senate (and is supported by President Bush), but was torpedoed by anti-gun zealots, including former Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), who helped his fellow anti-gun Senators attach a number of anti-gun amendments to the underlying measure. You can call your U.S. Senators at (202) 224-3121, or you can use the "Write Your Representatives" tool at http://www.nraila.org/ to find contact information. SETTING THEIR SIGHTS ON SOROS Could billionaire anti-gunner and anti-Bush zealot George Soros be running into legal troubles? Could be. An article in the January 19, edition of the Washington Times revealed that a complaint was recently filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), alleging that Soros violated numerous provisions of the Federal Election Campaign Act during his failed, high-dollar crusade to defeat President Bush. The National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) logged the complaint against Mr. Soros, alleging that he failed to report and disclose several campaign expenditures during his extended, anti-Bush publicity tour, as is required by federal law. Also named in the complaint was Fenton Communications, which reportedly assisted with the campaign, and two nonprofit organizations that hosted Soros speeches: the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and the Metropolitan Club of Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Soros spent much of the fall touring the country, touting the "virtues" of Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) to any who would listen. Unfortunately for him, it looks as if the people paying him the most attention were the watchdogs at NLPC. CALIFORNIA DREAMING -- SAN FRANCISCO STYLE As we reported in previous Grassroots Alerts, the City of San Francisco is attempting to place a ballot measure before its voters this November banning handguns. The measure would strip any citizen of his or her right to own a handgun for any reason. Only law enforcement officers, members of the military, and security guards would be allowed to possess them. The measure would also completely ban the sale, manufacture, and distribution of all handguns and ammunition in San Francisco, as well as the transfer of gun licenses. If passed in November, city residents would be forced to surrender their firearms within 90 days. We need not hypothesize about what would happen in that city if law-abiding citizens are stripped of their right to legally own handguns. Washington, D.C.--the murder capital of the United States--has already proven what occurs when only criminals own guns and are free to prey upon an unarmed populace. Over the past few decades, California has served as a laboratory for gun control experiments. And very often, sadly, what happens out west tends to drift eastward to other pockets of the United Sates. So not only would passage of the handgun ban have dire consequences for San Franciscans, but it would also no doubt serve as a harbinger for similar bans for other Americans outside of San Francisco who live under the fist of anti-gun city officials. NRA-ILA is committed to defeating this assault on freedom. We will keep you posted of relevant developments on this issue in these pages and elsewhere. In the meantime, however, NRA members and supporters in San Francisco need to ensure their voter registration is current, and actively work to register other opponents to the handgun ban as well. For information on voter registration, please visit http://www.nraila.org/ and visit the "Register to Vote" section. Finally, for those of you who reside outside of San Francisco, but who know pro-gun supporters living within the city, you need to ensure they are aware of this onerous proposal and are currently registered to vote. A LOOK AT THE STATES ARKANSAS Pro-gun Senator Steve Faris (D-17) has introduced SJR1, which seeks to propose an amendment to the Arkansas Constitution that would protect the right to hunt in Arkansas. Please contact both your State Senator and Representative and urge them to sign on as cosponsors to this important resolution. You can find contact information for your State Senator and Representative by using the "Write Your Representatives" tool at http://www.nraila.org/. ILLINOIS Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 23, when the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) will be holding its Lobby Day in Springfield. This is an annual event where ISRA members, and anyone else interested in advancing our Right to Keep and Bear Arms directly lobby their representatives in the Illinois House and Senate. If you can attend, please plan to meet in the cafeteria in the basement of the Stratton Building from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. for registration. The cafeteria opens for breakfast at 7:00 a.m. At 9:00 a.m., there will be a legislative briefing, and then all will proceed to the Capitol Building to find their respective representatives. If you need more information, please call the ISRA office at (815) 635-3198. NORTH DAKOTA HB 1205, a bill that will streamline the process for law-abiding citizens to acquire a Right-to-Carry permit, passed a House vote and will now move to the Senate. Please contact your Senator and respectfully urge him/her to pass HB 1205. You can find contact information regarding you Senator by using the "Write your Representatives" feature at http://www.nraila.org/. OREGON Gun control extremist Senator Ginny Burdick (D-Portland) has introduced SB 335, a bill that would allow local school districts to gut the state firearms preemption law and ban the possession of all firearms carried by Concealed Handgun Licensees on school property or where any school-sponsored event is taking place, for any reason. At press time, indications were that the Senate Judiciary Committee could hold a public hearing on SB 335 in Multnomah County early next week. Please continue to check http://www.nraila.org/ over the weekend for information as to the specific date, time and location of this hearing. SB 335 is just the first in a series of gun control bills that Senator Burdick is expected to submit in the immediate future, including a state version of the federal gun ban that expired last September.
