Since they were only 20 miles or so away, I called and asked if I could come up to their warehouse and handpick a few sets. The BEST part is that the kits all have the ADJUSTABLE LYMAN rear sight and finned barrels! I mentioned Sportsmans Guide and he told me that they buy the kits from him! He also mentioned that he may not be shipping them anymore of them. I met the owner Dan Tobin who is a great guy, he told me that I could look through all of the crates and to take as long as I wanted. The parts were all in seperate crates and most if not all were new or awfully close to it. 1. Most were AO manufacture 2. All had finned barrels and comps. 3. Bright "nickel" bolts. 4. There were both knurled and smooth actuators. All had milled-smooth selectors and safeties. 5. No-bolt type buttstocks. All had LYMAN rear sights. Some of the wood had minor handling dings. A few of the trigger frames had the original numbers lined out and new numbers stamped in them. But overall GREAT stuff! Mags are not included but he had a few crates of them. I suggest calling ASAP these are the last ones he has, they were shipping out kits all the while I was there. I took some pictures I'll email them to Nick so he can put them up. I had such a good time yesterday I went back today and bought; 3 of the accessory kits. I went through all of the mags approx 1,000 of them, found two Crosbys and several without markings. The rest were Seymours and AO all new in the wrap. The accessory kits are a good deal; 5- new 20-rd mags, pouch, belt, brass cleaning rod, oiler and combo tool for $109 w/ 10% off if you buy a parts set. BUT I gotta admit the LYMAN adjustable sights sucked me in!! BTW I asked Dan about the drums, he said they are not coming in through him. So I do not see his audience (though it is Ebay not gGunbroker), but he is playing it right, emailing all bidders in case they cancel it. Often a bidder calls it in to cancel it.... to preserve his "being on top" at the time it is canceled. Is there a quality and/or workmanship difference, one way or another, between the Auto-Ordnance kits and the Savage kits? Do collectors covet one over the other? Savage made the vast majority of guns and parts. AO originally subcontracted with Savage to make the Thompsons, then to keep up with the demand opened their own factory. Actually many AO guns were originally built with Savage parts in them. Most Savage owners want Savage parts for spares. There are no appreciable quaility differences. But AO marked parts are rarer. Now that I thought I was finally almost able to afford one. At least, until I saw a select fire with a bulging barrel for sale at over $30K http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/cop.gif on an auction site. That brings the question of are there any reasonable priced Thompsons left under $2k or am I dreaming? In either military or civilian trim (parked vs blued) ? I'd love to get an older (select fire) versus a new(ish) semi-auto version. Which brings up the question of the parts kits. I'm taking for granted that they are of the typical BATFE rules torch cut up receiver and internals. Where can I get a reciever to (legally) rebuild a parts kit? I do have an FFL03 (C&R License). But I'm really new to that too. And I know that there are Thompsons listed as C&R eligible. But are they all going for new car prices?
