pmlogg
I have seen a picture of a B1 canvas case with what could be a Savage serial number. On the inside of the main flap it is marked with the S above a 4 digit number 3xxx. Could this be a case which was matched with an low serial number Savage Thompson M1928? The case does not have a maker's name. Thanks
gijive
Hi, The cases wouldn't have been manufactured with the gun serial number. That number is the soldier's identification number that the case was issued to. US Army personnel marked their equipment with the first letter of the last name and the last four digits of the soldier's serial number. I own and have seen many pieces of WWII equipment marked in that fashion.

gijive
Sig, Here is a link to a WWII reenactors page that describes the Army regulations, dated 1942, explaining how to mark their equipment. Hope this helps. http://www.hardscrabblefarm.com/ww2/marking.htm
