Here's My Wwii Thompson M1

Recommended Posts

Well, it's paid for anyway and will hopefully make it to my dealer in Texas soon.

It's an AOC. Looks like it has had a '28 bbl installed because of the Cutts? I really don't mind at all. I like the compensator. And it was a fair deal I think. Less than $10k. Supposed to function flawlessly and comes with everything pictured. It really does not look like it has been messed with too much as the finish has a nice patina.

If I ever restored it would I need to change the bbl to put the ring sight back on? I was told that I would.

Serial number is in the 178xxx area. Anyone know how early it might be?

I know, I need a copy of American Thunder and will pic one up at the earliest opportunity.

Any way here it is....... my WWII M1 Thompson http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Tex,

Looks Good. I would be very proud!!

I am not sure about the barrel. Could be a smooth 28 or possible a M1A1 that someone attached a comp to. Can not see in the photo but.....

Does the comp have a pin in it?

Does the comp have any markings on it?

Guess you will not really know until you get it and have a closer look. Congratulations!

Barrels for Cutts are threaded “.750-28”. Current spec for a ¾-28UN2A thread shows a major diameter allowance of .7423-.7488 which would compare favorably with those I have measured.

Unthreaded barrels for the ring sight are actually tapered- .752 at the rear to .750 at the front of the sight boss. The ring sight is a press fit to this taper.

There are ways to adapt ring sights to threaded barrels, but it is never as good as it is with the interface for which it was designed.

That's a mighty nice gun your shootin' there Tex. See everybody, there are good Thompson's left out there and no reason to pay over $10k for one! I saw Dnnis Todd today and he has 2 M1's and he wants $15k for one marked "U.S. Property" and $14k for one not marked! And $18,900 for a Group Industries BAR! WTF is he thinking? Bad thing is some dufus doctor or lawyer with the bucks will pay it. Running the price by all "et rich dealers"up a few grand! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/mad.gif

Ok, I'm off my soap box for now, until I go back to the show tomorrow.

Tex, ya done yourself proud! Good for you. I have seen both 1928's and M1's with comps. That could be result of an arsenal rebuild. First Thompson I saw was in a local museum; a 28A1, smooth barrel, with comp. It was "on permanent loan" from Rock Island Armory", so I'd guess that's where the rebuild took place on that piece. That happened a lot.

As for when it was made: Acoording to Frank's book, it would be after July 1942, and if the serial number appears only on the receiver and not on the trigger frame, that dates it after January 1943. You may be surprised to find mismatching numbers on receiver and frame...that would indicate an arsenal (or maybe Class 2 manufacturer?) rebuild.

Nevertheless, shoot the bejeezes out of that beauty! Let us know how she performs.

i hate comp's on mi's....thats just me,

just brokered a deal of three military thompsons this week, for way better prices then i have been seeing.........

and have a deal on a military 28a1..................{for a blaster}$4,500.00

stuff is still out there, just harder to find then five or ten years ago or even 25 years ago.............you have to dig more...................

and i am really tired of seeing these 14,000 to 18,000 military asking prices, wanna barf??my 1975 shotgun news ad had new m1a1's's for 750.00...........i think at that time i had five in stock..........and it took awhile to sell them...

supply and demand............and some dealers wanna keep up that darn demand, funny thing............they want to pay squat when they are buying them tho...........

and i know a little about that..i sold them for over 30 years...............

you have a good gun tex.have fun with it...keep it oiled............and of course shoot it...........so you can say yes i did shoot it when somebody ask's...........

as i sure will shoot the 28a1 when the paper clears...wink!!

have fun with the stuff guy's................be carefull out there, and watch those prices..............lets not be the undoing of the 'hobby'

oh! "last man standing" has a good thompson scene.....and i like those .45's...............

take care,ron

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm really looking forward to it, since it is my first and hopefully not last TSMG.

I'll ad an update when I finally receive it.

In the mean time I'd like to gather up some spare parts and accessories for the M1.

Can y'all give me any idea about what I might want or need for it besides ammo and mags? http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif (I'm still trying to educate myself on these fine old war horses.)

Thanks again for all the help and use of this forum!
