Converting 50rd Drum For M1 Use

Recommended Posts

Yes, it can be done; even now with the ban in place as the converted drum will still work in a 21/28.

No walk in the park to accomplish, but not a death sentence either.

I have one that was converted years ago. It has the back of a stick welded to it and fins on the top over a widened cart. discharge apreture. It looks a bit funny close up, but works well.

I was shooting it on Sunday with some TCA pals at Ft Meade, Md.

Phil,

the BATF does allow magazine modification, even permanent mods as long as the magazine still fits/functions in the gun it was intended to. Welding a spine on the back of drum would still allow it to fit/function in a '21 or '28 (as long as you removed the tabs since a spine would prevent the drum from sliding in from the side.) This is how Craig Wheatly can get away with welding two TSMG or Sten mags top-to-bottom to create one of his uber-long 55 round stick mags, or cutting an extra notch in Madsen M50 mags for use in an M11.Nine. (Just wondering now...if Wheatley's 55 rounders were offered in the old Thompson catalogues, would they be "LV magazines"??? Maybe I have too much time on my hands....)

I've seen a Suomi drum that was converted to a Thompson M1 drum. Worked great. Here's a picture I have of it. It's not mine, but if I find one............well let's say I'll try it out. Oh, the top picture is a WH drum made to fit the M1. Bottom is a Suomi.

Easiest thing to do would be to sell me your drum cheap (don't butcher it!) and weld two 30 round sticks together. Perfectly legal (even now as the finished product will work in the gun it was designed for). Then you'll have a 52(?) rounder!!! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

One of the folks on the board makes these up, I believe, for sale for a lot less than a drum!
