Texas Man Posted November 18, 2003 Report Share Posted November 18, 2003 New here, great site. My question is about reported frame cracks in the West Hurley 1928. Has anyone found any cracks in their WH 28s? I have shot mine several thousand shots and all seems to be ok. In the case, if a frame was to crack, could you return it to the factory to be replaced? I brought my wh 28 before the 86 band and at first I had trouble getting it to work right, I slicked up the inside, but it still did not work right, then I put a G.I. bolt in it and it has never stopped roaring since. I am a collector of all kinds of guns, but the old Thompson M. G. will always hold a special place in my heart, It may not be a Colt or wartime model, But to me it does what I want it to do just fine. It is likely you could fire your Westy several hundred thousand rounds and not have the receiver crack, provided you are using standard Thompson parts. IMHO. The issue of receiver cracking, I think, has been greatly overstated. There is a section about this in the FAQ above, but I think most of the problems (with receiver fatigue) stems from attempts at speeding up the cycling of the gun or remedying feeding problems by removing the ears of the Blish lock. Returning it to the factory is not possible (or wise!) as far as I know. However, there are several well qualified Thompsonsmiths about who could repair such a crack. Be sure to check the FAQ. I did get a bufferTecnogly buffer for a min 14 and put in it, and a new recoil spring in it thou. The gun runs great and I haven't had any problems.
