railroader
Is there a specific tool that is used to remove compensators?
Elbow
Yep. Doug Richardson has one in his catalog. I think it was around 45.00 bucks. I used it once and it worked fine for me.
SecondAmend
On my Savage after I drifted out the pin, the comp turned off by hand (finger tip actually) with no holding torque at all.

ghostsoldier
Not to hijack this thread, but since we're on the subject of sight/comp removal, what's the best way to remove the front blade sight on an M1A1 barrel? Heat? Pressure? Both? Rob
Elbow
Ghostsoldier Not to give Doug Richardson all the buisness.but he has a front sight puller for your M1 in his catalog.+ the catalog has alot of tools you will need when rebuilding a Thompson. I think the catalog is around 3-5 dollars. It's worth it if you don't already have one yet. Elbow

full auto 45
Wouldn't a small gear puller work the same for the M1 site? My comp turned off by hand on the 28.
railroader
Actually, both comps on my parts sets turned off by hand after knocking out the pin. Getting the barrel off of the cut receiver is proving difficult, even with a Thompson barrel vice block set. I can't seem to get the barrel from turning in the blocks. What am I doing wrong? full auto 45
No, there is no specific direction to kock the pin out from. Left or right, it won't matter.
ghostsoldier
Thanks for the info Elbow, especially about DR's catalog (of which I own several older issues), but I don't plan to spend a lot of time working on my gun (go ahead with the smart-ass Kahr jokes, fellas http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif )...I just want to pull the sight off of my 16" barrel and install it on my soon-to-be purchased 10.5" barrel (AS SOON AS THE TAX STAMP ARRIVES http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/blink.gif ) when I hollywood-style bfa it...will the gear puller idea work as Mike suggests? It's cheaper and probably a lot faster to get... Rob
Elbow
That's all that it is is a gear puller and a two piece block that fits around the barrel and front sight. Gook luck Elbow
