Long Term Parts Storage

A few months ago I was looking for a way to store extra parts. I came up with the idea of using one of those food vacuum storage machines.

 

I place the part after oiling it well into the bag and draw out the air, then seal it. The bags are of fairly heavy construction and at this point seem to be holding their integrity. Then I use a permanent marker to write the part number as well as name on the bag.

 

I also use the Seal A Meal for preserving books that I have extra copies of to prevent degradation.

Good tip! I can see some real advantages with this system. Not only do you get the air tight storage, but you also are less likely to lose smaller parts or parts that should be grouped together.

I use the plastic cases that are about 15 x 10 in size and about 2 inches deep. It is filled with Nyoil and my spare parts.

I use my Foodsaver and Cosmoline.

Oil is a bit thin and tends to get sucked out when the vac comes on. I warm up the cosmoline and dip the part. Then I let it cool in the freezer for a half hour or so, place it in the bag and vacuum seal it.

I also write what it is and what it's for.....

 

Then I toss all parts for a specific gun in a labelled ammo can and - Voila!

Should be good for a thousand years!!

Seems to me that a piece of VPI paper with a dry part would be ideal in one of these vacuum packers.
