choppero
A customer asked if I could checker a smooth actuator. I would like to ask if anyone knows the style (90 deg or 60 deg pattern) and the lines per inch. Edited January 11, 2020 by choppero
mnshooter
The checkering on a Colt Actuator is 32 LPIThe diamonds/squares are cut at 90 degrees, at a 45 degree angle to the top of the actuator. Some appear to be cut very uniformly, almost as if by machine. Others are more like your photo, wandering around a bit. Seems to me that any reasonable hourly rate for a quality job should also pay for most of a complete knurled 28 actuator.Or, easily likely, you are a lot faster than me at metal checkering. If you just enjoy a challenge, more power to you.
Paladin601
No big deal, but the original was "Knurling" on the "knob" "handle" performed on a lathehttp://img.hisupplier.com/var/userImages/2013-05%2F09%2F103639377706.jpg Edited January 15, 2020 by Paladin601
BillyDixon
i would be careful as the metal around the knob is quite thin and has a weak cross section, a knurling tool on a lathe could crush it, most likely the knobs were knurled early in manufacturing before the inside of knob was cut out. setting the actautator in a machine to knurl looks like a major headake in its self, i wonder if anyone could find a way to stress free EDM the knurl ? just sayn

MPSAMM
I run CNC EDMs for a living. It would be very expensvive to knurl that piece. It is possible, but very time consuming. You would be better off buying one already knurled.
laurencen
did one a couple years ago, used the CNC with a rotary table, ground a form tool like a boring bar in the spindle and basically scratched the knurl in, worked fine but took close on a day programming and cutting, doubt I would ever do it again, had some pictures I will see if they are on the old hard drive
