firearm
I was shooting up some jpegs of two early Savage weapons that I have. When I was zooming in on the serial numbers, I noticed that in the model number of "1928" it almost looks like the number "8" was very carefully stamped over a "1". Look how the left side of the number "8" is almost flat. Note that these are very early commercial Savage weapons that I got out of a Sheriff's department in South Texas many years ago. Receivers are "New York" addressed. Maybe it is the camera lens but I am starting to wonder if these started life as "marked" 1921 Colt receivers.
laurencen
not roll stamped by the alignment, it looks as if the stamps had damage looking at the O and the 2, if the stamp had damage could cause the issue on the 8, compare the 1 to the 8 and the inside of the 8 is correct, had the 1 been stamped besides it should have been wider, I'm going with stamp damage
Arthur Fliegenheimer
If there wasn't a period after the NO that theory might require further study. But seems unlikely that COLT stamped MODEL OF 1921 and NO and then added a period that they left off all other receivers.
