Lt. Col Ralph Peters Demonstrates His Firearm Ignorance On Cavuto

Recommended Posts

FNC's Neil Cavuto had on this morning his favorite military authority, former U.S. Army military intelligence officer and HRC voter, Lt. Col Ralph Peters. If he ever finds out that Class III weapons are still legal for civilian ownership in USA Peters will have a nervous breakdown. Even after Peters corrects Cavuto that he never saw combat and wears no valor decorations, Cavuto continued to promote Peters as a decorated combat veteran to bolster Peters' views on 2nd Amendment, semi-auto firearms, 5.56 caliber, and why the Sheriff Deputies were correct not to enter school building while Cruz was firing.

I had the "pleasure" of working with Ralph during one of my tours in the Pentagon. I had been selected early for promotion to LTC and got pulled from an assignment as the Defense Attache to Yemen and sent to work as a special assistant to the Army's Intel Chief in anticipation of being selected for battalion command. Ralph worked in one of the intel directorates - we were both Majors at the time. He was known as an "out of the box" thinker but was generally his own worst enemy. He was the consummate staff officer and always thought he was the smartest guy in the room. He was arrogant and rubbed superiors the wrong way. If I remember correctly, he was initially passed over for LTC but his supporters convinced the DCSINT to push him and he got picked up above the zone. I also seem to believe that he retired immediately upon pinning on LTC - so he is paid as a retired MAJ but can claim the LTC title. He clearly is out of his league on gun issues...and his bias is also clear on other issues. He has no personality, IMHO - not sure why he remains the darling of the media.

Ralph was, to me, one of those officers who enjoyed the staff life and avoided those positions where your name was on the line. I ended up branch transferring to Military Intelligence as a Major - blew out a knee while serving as the Regimental Fire Support Officer to 9th Infantry Regiment at Fort Ord, CA. 2 years later, I get picked up early for LTC and within months of getting to the Pentagon was asked to volunteer to serve as G2 (the senior intel officer) for 3rd Infantry Division - those positions were voluntary because they could be career killers. I was shocked to find myself, with less than 3 years as an Intel Officer, being pushed to accept a G2 job when I knew there were many promotable MI Majors and LTCs out there. I jumped at the chance and had an amazing assignment and then was selected for and assumed command of the Intel Battalion assigned to 3ID, the 103rd MI.. To me, Ralph represents one of those MI officers who prefer to stay in the shelter of the staff positions instead of being in the exposed position of a staff principal or a commander. I never ran into Ralph again personally...but I also never regained any respect for him.

Of course, this is my own personal opinion and experience...but there you are.

Thank you for you first hand memories of encounters with Colonel Curmudgeon. Your summation of Ralphie actually answers your question. He is a stereotypical personification of what lame stream media envisions of former career military. That Ralphie can be counted on to loath the current occupier of the White House, imagine that Russia is more dangerous now than when they were the Soviet Union, and that American civilians can not be trusted with any firearm more sophisticated than a muzzleloader.

After retiring, I ended up in higher education and have been president of a college for the past 5.5 years. I've come to enjoy the shocked looks when people learn I'm a retired colonel and not a career higher ed alum. I'm occasionally asked to give a presentation on leadership and after starting out highlighting my military career I ask the participants where military officers fall on a scale of leadership styles from totally hands off to tyrant. Without fail, tyranny wins every time. While I met a few of those along the years, I find more of those outside the military than inside and they are generally equally unsuccessful.

FNB's Dagen McDowell was on Saturday's FNC "Cavuto Live" and she attempted to school Neil Cavuto on federal laws that deal with full auto firearms. Not an easy task after Peters corrupted Cavuto's mind. She was doing well until she described the 1986 NFA as a law that prohibited ownership for any and all automatic weapons by any U.S. citizen. It is a riddle how people who make their living on TV are invincibly ignorant about existing firearm regulations even after they have read them.

I do not understand why people think that just because someone was in the military they know weapon systems. Just like people think police officers know the law and ask them questions they should only be asking an attorney. But, when they are on news, everyone is an expert.

R.T.,

Wow! Thanks for the heads up. His "quitting" FNC is being heralded as a bold and righteous move by lame stream media. Apparently Neil Cavuto's sycophancy of Ralphie wasn't sufficient to appease the HRC supporter.

You are more than welcome. Peters was one that when ever he came on I changed the channel, just could not stand the nonsense he put out.

All of the articles I have read so far leave out the fact that his contract was also up for renewal which may have something to do with his tirade. Either way he certainly left no bridge not burned.
