M 1919A4 Help

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm at wits end here. Have a 1919A4 .308 Izzy conversion. Can not cycle more than 5 rounds. Follow the TO, played with the headspacing, lit candles , cussed a lot but nothing makes a change for better. Anyone run into this problem before? Any ideas? All help will be appreciated.

First thing I would do is change ammo, it's the easiest and quickest thing to try.

What are the symptoms? Miss feed on the 5th, fail to extract, fail to fire or possibly short stroking? I'm guessing its a short stroke and doesn't feed or extract correctly.

IF we are talking full auto , and IF we mean it can fire a belt of ammo in 3-4 rd bursts but dies if you try longer bursts , the answer is simple , your timing is off .

IF it is semi auto , look at the spring under the belt pawl located in the reciever in the center of the beltway . A lot of them are too stiff .

Look at your cartrige length and spacer thickness . If every 5th round is different than the other four , a tracer , perhaps , and shorter , the rim may be too far forward to be caught by the extractor and you will not pick it out of the belt .

Otherwise , we'll need more details about what it's doing. Simple problems can be frustrating untill the cause is tracked down.

Semi Auto , Israeli .308 Conversion. The malfunction is failure to load the 6th round, Always the 6th round, it is not intermittent and it is not random, very consistent failure to load the 6th round. Up to that point it fires extracts and loads like a clock. Belts of 10, and 20 with different ammo, all rounds inspected after being loaded for consistency, equal positioning and aligned for test firing. It is a .308 . booster and now we have used several 7,62X51 brands of ammo. It is properly lubed, head spaced and timed.

No timing on a semi-auto ( timing is how far from lock up is the firing pin released ) .

Be sure you're setting the headspace correctly and mark the notch @12 o'clock . Did you switch your barrel retaining spring when you converted ? The 30-06 one has a triangle nose to hold the bullet shaped notches of the 30-06 bbl , the .308 bbls have a flat stepped one . If wrong , it could jump out and change your headspace. Marking it will allow you to see movement .

Again , we need exact details of what it's not doing . Every sixth round ? Could the belt be catching on something or the spent links not ejecting ?

Chris

PS If you know you are setting the headspace correctly , try it one click looser , then 2 clicks out , max,
