Tuning Stick Mags for 1927 A1 Deluxe

Recommended Posts

I have 7 - 30 rnd stick mags, but a few of them are dropping rounds in between the bolt and the feed ramp frequently. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find detailed instruction on how these mags should be set up, how the lips should be formed, dimensions, anything that can help me sort this out. How much clearance should there be between the lips and the bolt with the bolt closed, etc. Most of them are Seymour mags that have had the catch slot opened up to fit. The gun runs fine with the L drum, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the gun. Thanks for any help.

Do the mags that come with the gun and can be purchased for a 27a1 just not work and the only option is to put a Drexel to a ww2 relic? I hear a lot of problems when the modification is done. So why do it? Why not modify the mag catch and preserve the WW2 relic? Sorry but will someone please enlighten me. Sorry for the rant.

The mags that came with the gun 30 years ago work OK. Back then, you could get WWII or surplus mags dirt cheap. I got 5 of them for 40 or 50 bucks, so it was just a way to get what seemed like a good deal on magazines. I had them all working pretty well back at the time. It is just now that I finally picked the thing up again after years of storage that I'm having problems with them. New factory or any mags now are very expensive for it, SRP is around $70 for a 30 rnd stick, I believe.

If I modify the mag catch, I suspect that the factory mags that came with it and modern mags will no longer work with it, then I'd need a separate mag catch to change for them, which I will not do. I see from the Kahr site that modern Kahr 1927 A1 mags will NOT fit W-H models, so that is another reason to make these work. I guess I'm lucky to have the ones I do.

If you have a good L drum, they generally feed very well as there never is the height issue of the modified stick mags .. About the only constant with the semi Thompson

Yes, my L drum works fine. My stick mags work OK now. The lips needed to be reshaped back to the original shape, the mags needed to dry out from cleaning, and the gun was probably over oiled/greased. Too much oil can cause a lot of problems, especially with magazine feeding. The cartridges can squirt out ahead of the bolt and get pinched. I found out the magazines need to be clean but also bone dry, i.e., no oily film. The ramp and chamber area also needs to be clean and dry. I must have had too much Hoppes gathering in the ramp area and it was collecting all kind of crud. Once I got all those things resolved, it works OK. I still need to do another testing to make sure. The height of the mag catch hole was never the problem in this case, it seems. It was just a combination of all these other things that seems to have created the problem, that and I was adjusting the feed lips. For my gun and mags, the feed lips need to be left alone. I made another comment on how I restored the feed lips to their original shape using a 0.470" or so steel rod.
