Registered Bolts

If a person goes through the hoops to buy a registered bolt--say, for an UZI--does he also have to register the SMG in which the bolt will be used? For example, a guy buys and registers the UZI SMG bolt and has two UZI Model Bs...Does he have to register both UZIs and pay the $200 tax on each in order to make them capable of shooting full auto? Thus, $200 to register the bolt, and $200 each to convert the Model Bs to take the registered bolt and go FA.

Honestly my friend when it comes to stuff like this your best bet is to contact the BATF and talk to a special agent. And get a signed letter from them detailing that what you're doing is legal and keep that in your records.....

 

The laws are so foolish that nobody knows them! How come on a Thompson or BAR the only part that you need to register is the upper receiver, but on an M16 or UZI you need to register the bolt? Utter foolishness is what it is.......

 

Again, call the BATF, it's their job to help you (after all you pay their salary) and as long as you are nice and not confrontational they can be very helpful. Keep in mind they work at the speed of government so you may have to pester them.

I noticed that you said "...does he also have to register the SMG in which the bolt will be used?" If the gun IS an SMG it must be registered. Since the gun is registered the bolt does not have to be registered, though it is OK to put a registered bolt in a registered gun. It is redundant.

 

If you meant to ask "Does one need to register a semi-automatic UZI to use it with a registered full-auto bolt installed?" The answer is no. The bolt converts the whole gun into a MG while it is in the Uzi.

 

The bolt can be moved from gun to gun but please note that while the registered bolt is in a gun, that gun CAN take on characteristics of a MG (very short barrel, etc.) AS LONG AS the bolt is in the gun. If the bolt become separated from the gun, the gun is now subject to all laws regarding barrel length, etc. Be careful with that!

 

Please be aware that it is NOT possible to register any new MG bolts, receivers or full-auto conversion devices. This ban has been in effect since May 19, 1986.

 

Any registered MG bolt, receiver or conversion device made before that date can still be transfered as long as it is on an ATF form 1,3 or 4.

 

Also, registered bolts and conversion devices can be repaired but NOT replaced. If the bolt/device is destroyed beyond repair (or serial number is destroyed), you are screwed.

 

My "Thompson" is made this way. It has a registered full-auto firing pin in it. As long as it stays in the gun, I can keep the MG barrel on it without having to register the gun as an SBR.

 

atc310r is correct- the ATF is the ultimate source for any info on this matter. When I had my gun made, I got I letter from the ATF firearms branch that states what I mentioned above.

Norm pretty well covered it. In the case of a conversion bolt, the bolt is the MG and the regulated item. The bolt is the MG via the "part or parts specifically designed to convert a semi to full" clause of the definition. The host is just a host unless it is modified into a NFA configuration while under the bolt's "MG umbrella". In that case, you would need to register the second item (ie, SBR) to remove the bolt. Some people choose to note the host gun info in 4h, but it is not required and if noted does not limit the bolt's portability to another host.

A word of caution, the NFA branch in WV. has some boobs that answer the phone.

I've made the mistake of asking them questions and was disappointed, their answers were blatantly wrong.

Ask for a "specialist" to get an answer.

I just bought a registered bolt Uzi. The host weapon is simply a semi auto. The bolt is the registered machinegun. However, the registration paperwork states that the bolt is installed in a semi-auto uzi S/N *******.

 

Most buyers I talk to typically want to purchase a Vector or Group gun because they are built to full SMG specs. Your semi-auto Uzis were not. The bolt guns typically sell for less than a Vector or Group gun. I purchased this bolt gun well below what I would pay for any Vector or Group gun and will sell is for far less than the others. This gun also came with an old RPB .45 suppressor with an adapter to thread it onto the Uzi barrel which someone had threaded. Geez.....that was a $200 waste. Anyways...in the near future this "beauty" LOL will be posted on my website:)

 

If you can spend a little more...buy the Group or Vector gun. They cost a little more up front...but bring more when you are ready to sell.
