Russian Spam Attempt Today

Recommended Posts

Some folks have wondered why the site has a 3 question challenge prior to allowing registration, and why memberships are not automatically approved. I manually approve all new memberships before they can post. Today is the reason. When I went to check the queue, which I check about every other day, there were 60 new memberships to approve. Most were automatically banned by the system software due to known spamming e-mail addresses. Most had e-mail addresses that ended in .ru. Usually, there are just a few new membership approvals in the queue, so it was obvious to me when I saw the chart spike, that there was a problem. Anyway, I'm still in the process of deleting those accounts. I also just updated one of the challenge questions.

We have several Russian members, and I welcome anyone in the world who has a legitimate interest in the subject, but this was obviously a spam attempt. We've had a few of them over the years.

Here's a fun example of one of the e-mail addresses:

"verik-zasamar@zaim-fart.ru"

Thanks to David for keeping this forum well-moderated. Must be kind of a second job with no pay. Thanks Dalbert.

Thanks for fighting the fight, my son used to work IT at the Fort Worth Zoo. He told me that he would spend hours every day deleting junk and porn that would be in the zoo’s incoming every day just to get to the legitimate emails.
