Winchester 97 Trench Gun Sling Swivel

Recommended Posts

I've had a 97 Trench gun for nearly 40 years that is not military marked and not a takedown model. One concern I've always had wast that the sling swivel is not the triangular shaped ones I've seen on nearly, if not all, trench guns. My swivel is more typical oval shaped. I suppose it could be an after-market heat shield assembly but it seems to match the gun in patina and age. The oval shape of mine prohibits attaching a typical military sling. Anybody have a source for an origianl swivel? Thanks in advance. Chuck

Our experience with Winchester and Savage trenches is that the rear swivel will take any USGI sling , but that the front does cause some troubles. The 1903 / 1917 and M3 series of Kerr silngs are just a hair too wide to fit . The 1907 seem to all fit as does the few 1923s we've tried. For the most part , the M1 web slings also fit , but we have run across a few that were a touch too wide in the metal tab to fit right . They could usually be played with as far as angles or catching the web just behind the tip on the swivel and compressing the material a bit , and by that way forced in , but just easier to try another one.

The tube set up looks to be a Win. riot set up. The swivel is a style like unto Stevens / Savage and Mosberg . The band does not remind me of any US miltary issue. I believe this is a put together or some comercial sample I'm not aware of. I am into USGI WW2 weapons , so the newer stuff I'm not real up on.

Uncle Dudley,

Original WWII Winchester M12 riot guns didn't have sling swivels, front or rear. That does look like a Winchester M12 take down style magazine tube, though.
