Useable barrel?

Recommended Posts

I've had this thompson barrel in my extra spare parts pile. On the last section of thread, there is a section chipped off. Is this still serviceable? I've just held onto it for a while now, just curious as to whether it's still any good?

Although the chamber walls have some damage which can be seen in the picture or what certainly appears to be striations from some sort of tooling that was used, the chamber can be bored out, threaded, a plug screwed in and the chamber recut. Not really cost effective for such a barrel given the availability of new Thompson barrels. Some day it will be cost effective. FWIW

I've fixed barrels much worse than that.......sometimes just for fun. I fixed a sten barrel last year that looked worse than that which was certainly not economically feasible. I've done others that are impossible to find on the loose. Odd or scarce barrels these days can fetch well over 1000 so putting some time and effort in can be worth it and it's best to test new techniques on cheap stuff. I'm sure if it were a Colt barrel answers would be much different.

The broken off thread is irrelevant - does not affect anything. The mouth of the

chamber needs to be smoothed/rounded in a lathe with a 0.100" radius corner

rounding tool. If there is no other damage ( I can't see any from the photos) then

it should be ok.

My $0.02

Your question was is it "serviceable" not is it salvageable. Anything can be fix with enough money, but you should ask how much it would cost to fix that used barrel in comparison to buying a brand new one for $99. . Some people have more money than time and will just buy new, while some have more time than money and can take the time to fix the old one.

Ok. Thanks. This is pretty much what I figured. I was holding onto it for a spare, but I'll probably end up buying another and just hang onto this one for now. Thanks
