My new project, Reising drum.

Just sharing my new personal project thanks to BarrelXchange.

This is going to be fun.

 

Probably going to cut a Keystone Reising 50 magazine.. Felt sacrilegious to cut an original one.. Even though it is likely it would work better due to already being designed to be a single stack. I printed a 3d template to get the angles right on my cut.

 

I'm considering making lips on the magazine (tower) so the same base can be used. This way I can just replace the tower if I want to use the Suomi drum in another rifle.

Exciting to see someone taking this project up. Looks like youve got a great starting point with the barrelXchange parts. This is on my project list too. Like you Im hesitant to sacrifice one of my H&R magazines. Ive considered the pro mag 45 Uzi mags and a sleeve from DougStump. That way you get a Uzi drum and a Reising drum and you save big time on the initial magazine costs.

I had one of Troy's drums, it worked well, I wouldn't want to try to build my own though. But yes I'd use the factory 12 round mag as opposed to one of the worthless Keystone mags.

Troy did a good job on the drums. Very interesting ideas to turn a 9mm to a 45ACP. One may think to just throw a tower on the drum, but there are minute details.

I did get a stl file for the Uzi magazine, but haven't tried printing it out only because I don't have a Uzi magazine to use it on. Been meaning to buy one.

The Keystone I have is the latest generation of the Reising 50 magazines that I ordered mid '20. I received beginning of the year. (it was their presale). I'm going to take it out probably this weekend and try it out. If it feeds fine then I'll do the Keystone. Otherwise I'll do the H&R. Only issue I see with the Keystone magazine is the last round. The follower is too far over where the bolt will hit it on the front half of the follower's side so after the last shot is fired, it either will force the follower slightly down, gouge the follower until it doesn't present resistance, or bolt gets stuck partially open. I plan to probably either file down the side of the follower or modify it to not fully go all the way up (enough to allow contact to the last round, but not enough to have the bolt hit) or I might 3D print my own follower..

 

Nevertheless, I'm very optimistic about the Keystone... I plan to post about it when I get a chance to fire them.

 

I was debating using the Keystone for the build but it fits perfectly in my Reising. I think they may have improved the feedlips fit. Note that I bought a Christie magazine and it didn't even fit my Reising so I sold it off! (All the H&R magazines I have couple of 20rd, many 13rd all fit perfectly)

Talking with Troy, he was using Christie magazines on his builds but I suppose it depended on what magazine he was sent.

Well, they couldn't have made them any worse!

 

I don't know if I ever asked Troy which tower he used on my drum as I bought it directly from him already completed.

If you throw up a photo of the tower I can probably tell you, but likely it was a Christie. Only other choice I know of are Keystone which is essentially Christie tooling. That's what he told me what he used for his builds. Probably Christies were cheaper than the originals back then.

 

I heard mixed things with the Keystone. It fits into my Reising, and it hand cycles pretty good.. though we know that doesn't mean I won't have issues. I'm going to be experimenting with a few of the Keystones I have. One I'm going to adjust the follower, expand it to make it not go as high and keep more level. (the follow's front area stick up very high interfering with the bolt). Another I'm going to polish/remove some material where the bolt scraps, and last one just leave it as is.

I don't have it any longer, was sold with my Reising pre-sample. I was amazed at how poor the Keystones I got were compared to the Christies I had. Since they bought the tooling and rights from Christie, you'd think they would be identical but Ken must have used some elbow grease when he was finishing his mags.

Here are a couple Keystone next to my H&r.

 

Both had follows sticking way up. I modified one of them to not point so high due to scraping. You can see how it is scraping on the follower. The one I adjusted does not hang up.

 

I had a Christie and it looked great but didn't fit due to the Action bar was more narrow.

I didn't take a photo of the back unless you look at my original kit photo. I thought the weld job on Christies looked better, but as long as it works, I'm happy.

I did a Thompson drum (50 round) with a then cheaper Reising 20 round mag. Worked well. Sold it and the guy that bought sez it didn’t work well with his gun, but he was going to work on it. Haven’t heard anything from him in over 10 years, so ?? Did a 100 round drum as well, but the drum fell out numerous times…very heavy and that was a lot of weight to try to hold up. Reused the tower for the 50.
