Magazines for MP 44

Recommended Posts

Interesting to me that MP 44 mags are supposedly rare yet I see numerous original mags listed on GB. I just picked up one for $325.00 but most are listed in the 500 to 700 level depending on condition and markings of course.

Where are all these mags coming from? I am talking about original German Mags and East German.

Speculators would have you believe they are rare, when in actuality there are probably at least 30 mags for every transferable gun. I've never paid over 300(which I was an idiot to do), and now that I have my fill and use repro mags in the rare event I shoot, I'm out of the speculator market. Same thing is going on with MP40 mags, and last I checked they weren't making any more MP40's, and mags are everywhere. I maxed out at $50 on those and am done there too.

Hopefully guys are still paying stupid money when I go to sell!

Do you know a good source for original MP 44 mags for under 300? I think you are "right on" regarding the amount of mags circulating n the U.S. I guess if folks like me are willing to pay over 300 for a mag, then that is the rate. Hate to be a trend setter on overpriced goods!!

I watch those MP44 mag auctions closely as i have a 43 sturm. The under $300 price is gone for good. $375 and up is the norm. There are a few sellers asking about double that but i dont see them selling. Same thing is going on with the MP40 mags. There are a variety of different markings and stampings on the sturm mags that make each one a little different and collectible to some people.

I got one out of auction with other parts that cost averaged out to about 200 a few weeks back. I got a pair in an auction a year or two ago for just under 600. Yes, guys paying a lot sets a benchmark. Fortunately I'm no longer a contributor to the madness!

Markings on the mags mean nothing to me, but yes I'd agree somehow there's a collector market there for some people? To me they are like sten mags and the guns are the collectibles, not the mags. Even an MKb42 mag isn't worth much since the rare couple guys that own them have plenty and are in need of no more, but you see the insane prices? I guess it's like bayonet collectors? I buy bayonets as an accessory to a gun I have while some guys just collect bayonets?

Maybe I should sell the guns and start a world class sling collection? .....less competition in the sling market!

Yeah, when the price goes high enough things start coming out of the woodwork. I sold off several MP40 mags, keeping only the ones that matched my gun for manufacturer. The demand is definitely there.

I have noticed that there are a LOT more collectors of firearm accessories than just a few years ago. This is particularly true of firearm accessories for guns that are difficult to own (machine guns!). This past weekend I ran across a guy who is trying to collect a magazine from every WW2 machine gun. I wished him 'good luck!' on finding a Japanese Type 100 SMG mag!

A very interesting weapon. How do you supply the 7.92x33mm ammo? Is there still surplus available? Or is it by reloading?

PPU still makes new ammo for the sturm. There is still some East German surplus out there too.Recently there was a GB auction for 1800 older PPU rounds.

I agree, i own maybe a dozen vintage mags for my sturm. I have 5 cut down repro mags that hold 10 rounds ea and typically just use those at the range. If you watch the auctions its the same guys bidding on the mags. I know one of the guys and he has over 200 in his collection and still looking for more.

Lots of surplus and lots of new production ammo. I use both.

20 years ago i was offered crates of them for $80 bucks each new blue, new bonderized, nice grey green with a clearcoat

all German markings fresh out of Germany and Czechoslovakia. some marked 43 44 and a few different but not Post war ALL PURE pre 45.

so what do i do {have no 43/44/45} I buy 12 because they are cool. And had MP-43's and 44's in the past.

Later i throw in six with a MP-44 sale. Years later i do the 1,000 mag deal to bring in new made blue mags. some of the best repros out there. when the semis come out. and sell 500 real quick .Now all long gone....

Still kept the originals. and when one guy asked. i said $800 take them He did. Now i wish i kept one for a paperweight to remember when ha ha. The guy who owns 200 cool deal his family will thank him for the cash stash they make when he's gone and they sell them off for whatever they can reach at that time...R.K.

7 of anything is a lot, but it does explain the 200 mags....sort of. I'm pondering a second one, but just bought another MG34 for much less than an MP44 sells for these days. I'd far rather have two of those than MP44's, but that's the fun in collecting. I think I had 7 MACS at one point, but we just refer to that as a "pile", not a collection, and they just sort of accumulated because I lost track.

Ammo has been sort of a problem forever and even when it got down to .50 I only bought a few thousand rounds, because that was still a lot of money relative to other guns. If ammo and mags were like AK pricing those guns would be 45K all day long.

Nice! I'm assuming this one was partially matching? I think given the choice at the same price I'm taking the 34' every time? The MP44 on sturm was listed at 35 and seems to be sold. Back in the day 34's brought a slight premium over MG42's and were nearly triple what an MP44 was bringing. How times have changed? Or are people crazy?

Urban armory not only has the Jap 100 mag - they also have the gun as well.

I have an MP44 and about 12 mags - had more but sold and traded them, kept the best 12 to use.

With blanks at least the original magazines work a LOT better than the reproduction mags I have tried.

My guess is that the market amongst owners of the SSD guns, NFA guns and home-built semis is probably quite robust.

Sellers are just pushing to get as much as they can.

The batch (8-9) of MP44 mags on GB from MG34gunner were all bought and flipped with a $200 mark-up from one of the on line parts dealers.

I have about 300 rounds of steel cased East German in 15 round boxes that I won't ever shoot (and don't really recommend) and am selling, I bought before the Privi was widely available.

Mine now does most (all) of it's shooting with blanks from Atlantic Wall.

Me lining the old Haenel up for a shot.

anyway to answer the OP's questions

these mags that BRP had were modified to shoot/hold only ten rounds and had a rivet to prevent the follower from going down further, where they came from I do not know, but they have had several runs of them for sale. they have a hole in the back of the mag, they were all wartime mags. but over priced for me

I am still finding mags for under $ 300.00, one must be persistent, .

Since I do not need more mags and refuse to use repo anything. This is how I did it. I placed ad's on ALL the firearms sites, in the WTB section. You would surprised how many mags are floating around owned by folks, who do not own a MP-44 or PTR clone. I recently picked up a East German one. There is a guy called panzer, he took this advice and picked up a few mags cheap recently

for reloads I use 308 range pick ups reformed, commercial brass works best and open up the throat, I liked east german fodder when it was cheap , but those days have sailed. also Graf's had tons of pri primed brass up to recently & projectiles & I use 4227 that's still available if one looks hard enough

What grain load of 4227 do you use in your reloads?

I do not like the liability of giving out grains lets say its around 19 grs, others swear by other powders, my reloading mentor, ( in heaven looking down ) always said to use one powder for many calibers, it cuts down on cost and storage. In these times he was right, I assume he would never have thought things would be as they are now.

a quick google search will show numerous formula's/powders for 8mm kurz
