Japanese Type 99 Machinegun Caliber Conversions?

Recommended Posts

I am interested in purchasing a type 99 machine gun

However would like to know if any board members knows a gunsmith who does a .308 caliber ( or other caliber) conversion on these?

I dont anticipate shooting it in 7.7 because of scarcity of ammo

Thanks In Advance

Aside from what I mentioned in a post to you offsite, the T92 HMG ammo on strippers is semi-rimmed. For firing in T99s MGs in 7.7, I turn down the rim slightly so it beomes rimless. This ammo is the same as standard rifle ball ammo and functions perfectly in the T99s.

Caveat: the cintage Jap 7.7 ammo is very corrosive but careful cleaning by immersion in boiling water with the addition of some ammonia cleans it up perfectly. Swab the bore and gas tube with the same water. Never have had an6 lroblems with the ammo if thwt is done. FWIW

A friend of mine makes rimless 7.7 Jap ammo from .30-06 cases, he says it's easy, just resize in a 7.7 die and trim. The case head is approx. .002 undersized but the first firing takes care of that. May be too much work for machine gun consumption rates though

Several years ago I made 12 .308 conversion barrels for Type 99 MG's, and sold them all on line. I started with Israeli .308 Browning 1919 barrels and had a local machinist turn them down to the correct profile.

If you skip the cooling fins and the carry handle slot, it would be rather simple and low cost. You have to move your front sight/gas block to the new barrel. Over the years, I found several front sights in parts bins at gun shows and made full extra barrels.

Good luck on your endeavor

Jim Langley in Congress Az, did them at one time. Do not know if he is still around and if so, has any left. In .308...

Recently I have been in touch with Jim.

He is retired now, so doesn't make the Japanese MG parts.

I have 2 of his Type 99 magazines, and just the 7.62X39 barrel.

I lack the AK magazine adapter and the flash hider for the 7.62X39 conversion barrel.

If anyone has those to sell, please contact me.

You can either use the adapter or do like the Chinese did and weld a wedge on the back of the AK mag catch and a lip on the front.

Have done it both ways for people its pretty easy work all things considered.

Do you offer the AK magazine conversion as a service?

I have the AK magazine bodies if you can weld on the pieces to allow them to lock into the Type 99 magazine well.
