Thompson Parts and Accessory Prices

Recommended Posts

I would like to get opinions on the retail price of the following Thompson parts: (1) Colt/Remington stock and hardware, the stock has the anchor stamp, the inside of the butt plate is "R" marked; the butt plate and stock and have matching drawing numbers, (2) Savage "S" marked vertical fore grip and pistol grip. The fore grip is unaltered and in excellent condition. The pistol grip shows slightly more wear but is a good match for the fore grip. (3) full box (white label) of Peters .45 Shot Cartridges for TSMG and (4) Lyman 1928 rear sight and sight protectors (attached to a de-milled Savage 1928 receiver. The stock is in good-very good condition with scattered handling marks but no cracks or repairs browned butt plate and most of the original blue on the other components. All the stock components are Colt/Remington parts with original finish. The stock and grips came from a Colt 1928 Navy police gun. I would prefer to sell the grips as a pair and all the other items separately. I have never sold on Gun Broker but I have a bought and sold at Rock Island Auction Company for years. I am not interested in offers at this point but want to establish a price range for these parts.

TGCJ,

You have been a member of this forum for a long time. If you spent any time here over the years, you realize you have several very desirable items, i.e., Colt's buttstock, Savage vertical foregrip and Peters shot shell Box. The other parts you referenced are easily found and not in the same price category.

Pictures are must to provide a reasonable estimate of value. Reproductions of both gun parts are known to exist. Showing the buttstock and butt plate (both sides) assembly numbers would be a plus. The inside of the grip mount channel on the Savage fore grip is a must. Information on the Colt's NAVY donor gun could increase desirability too, i.e., Form 10 gun destroyed.

There are different variations of the Peters shot shell box. Which one do you have? Has the box been opened? Pictures answer a lot of questions.

I understand that the Colt stock, Savage vertical forearm and shot cartridges are scarce and desirable parts. I view this site regularly. At this point I want to get a general idea of the retail value of these parts and determine the sale location that will give me the most exposure when I decide to sell. The shot cartridges are in the same white box pictured on page 40 of your book with brass cases and red fiber tip. The box has been opened, contains 50 cartridges and is in approximately the same condition as the box pictured in your book. None of the cartridges are broken. I will try to post pictures but for the purposes of discussion assume the Colt stock and Savage fore grip are original and in very good overall condition. I have not posted pictures on this site before and need to figure out the process.

I would put the parts on Gunbroker start at .01 and let the market set the price. If you let this forum know they are on a bidding site you will get the best price.

Just my two cents. I always hate to price somebody else stuff.

The value range for the stock and fore grip Colt Chopper provided is about what I figured. I will try and post some pictures of the stock and fore grip. I would describe the stock as "Very Good" and the fore grip as "Excellent". I have looked at a number of Colt Thompsons at Rock Island Auction in the last several years and the stock condition is pretty much what you would expect on a police gun with 80-85% blue. The fore grip shows very little wear but I have never seen an un-modified Savage grip in excellent condition. My guess is the shot cartridges are in the $600-$750 range. Best guess on the rear sight is $200-250.

Shot cartridges can be had anywhere from $250 opened to as much as $750 mint unopened. It is a wide range.

I'm relatively new to the Thompson but based on my hunt for Lyman rear sight for my WH, I found them to sell about $200 or above. I know IMA has it listed at $250 and SARCO for $335. Edited by Ryo

I'll double Frank's 2 cents. I've bought & sold things on Gunbroker (including last week). The value of something is determined by the buyer, not the seller. I've seen PPSH-41 stuff sit online for half a year because the buyers disagree with the seller. So the latter sits on his inventory while demanding that other people share his financial opinion. Eventually, it just gets taken down, so the seller has lost time, paid to warehouse his stuff, and made no money. Many moons ago, I got into a bidding war for a Johnson LMG. The opening bid was $100. It didn't stay there very long. Ultimately, I tapped out. But my final bid would have been the same whether the auction started at that number or a penny.

Gunbroker has few bargains. List them for .01 starting price and you will get full market price.

Trying to guess at value in todays market wont help you. Prices on some items Ive sold are 200-1000% more than I expected recently. You wont be giving them away on Gb. You will get full market - whatever that is today

Just make sure you describe the ad on GB the right way so it could be easily found.

If you don't you get less traffic and someone will get a great deal. Seen it happen before.

I've also heard some bad sellers cough out.. back out of the deal saying the "sold" it at the shop and they didn't realize it just because they didn't get the price they want. GB doesn't seem to penalize those people if they have good feedback ratings.

Once you've decided on a selling price advertise the stuff on Sturmgewehr.com

Mostly knowledgeable buyers (many of whom post on this site) on a NFA-specific site, far fewer idiots and lookie-loos to contend with

I keep up with prices on Gunbroker through three sellers that sell collections. They all start at .01 with no reserve and they are bringing high prices. Last week two Colt Boas with low serial numbers brought 90K. Thats two 21 Thompsons.

I bring this up to point out that people are willing to pay high prices for what they want if you just list on set price site you could be leaving money on the table.

Well there is also that point of how much do you need to make? If you and the buyer are happy with a flat/set price then does it really matter if money is left on the table I remember when this hobby was about the history preservation-not greed and profit...and YES Im a class III dealer who is saying this.

Lets keep pricing stuff out of site to where new buyers cant afford to get into it, then what will the stuff be worth since youve limited your market to a very small group. A $10k-$15k Gun sounds really expensive, but its doable if someone really puts their mind to it. A $35k-$55k Colt Thompson.....well thats a very very limited number of buyers.

Sorry for the rant but Im sick of everyone worries bout the money anymore. Set a price, sell it or keep it. Its only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Appreciate the comments on values. My estimates of the value of the parts appear to be in line with current prices. Like most collectors I like to get as much as I can when I sell. I can't recall any instance when a seller reduced the price of a gun or part because I 'needed' it or was a new collector. In my experience the more I 'needed' the part/gun the more I paid. I am satisfied with any arms length transaction when two equally well-informed parties agree on a mutually acceptable price. I would prefer to avoid the overhead associated with auctions but I think that is the nature of the game today. Although I no longer need the stock, forearm and other parts I don't have no immediate need to sell either. I would prefer to have the cash to advance my collection and if I can sell for a reasonable price I will let the parts go. I will notify the board when I list the parts. Thanks to everyone who responded.

If you do not want an auction format and associated fees, you could use: http://www.sturmgewehr.com

I understand their set price fee structure for advertisements are very reasonable for someone that only has a few items to sell. You will certainly get an audience from the machine gun community.

Good luck!

As we all know History and just the love of it went away years ago.Its always about the bucks..a TIME when i would buy a Colt for $5,000.00 and ask 6,000 /6,500. and that was it a cased set of course more. Paid 8500 sold for $10,000.00 Some bought at that price from me and not even five years later. wanting $30,000.00 I remember selling a new mint 1918 Marlin Rockwell to a car dealer for $5,000.00. And how he thought maybe too much. I bought it for $3,500.00, current asking price $55,000 WOW nice mark up huh?

So yeah i don't give a rats arse what another will say.. Its not History or love its the freaking buck. we all destroyed the market. and now its poor grade guns with b.s. mags and drums thrown in.

And to think some actually blasted J.Curtis Earl naw he was just ahead of his time on the bandwagon. The best is yet to come. as my line on the bottom of my posts. Predicted that future didn't I....Or maybe the auction house.

But i thank them for it. My History of love of it stupor is no more..grab all the cash! this would have bought you the entire L.E.S. collection over 35 years ago. Now only five Colt 21's sad freaking fact there.

ha ha Ron K.

Good Advice -

Buyers using the term MP44 won't find auctions listed under MP43/44 - sounds obvious, right, go take a look.

I usually list every variation of title at the bottom of the auction description, 1928 1921 1921ac m1 m1a1 - blah blah (no commas, just spaces, to be sure)

It sounds pedantic, but even now, I have to type three different search words to find different Bren gun parts, because people are dumb.

Sellers list poorly and DON'T do their research and yes, they do lose out, and no gun broker is not a fair market indicator - if you list badly you WILL lose.
