Next Weeks Thompson Fireside Chat

Recommended Posts

This is an open challenge to Arthur Fliegenheimer from myself, John Jr, to have an open debate regarding the Thompson SMG. This will be entirely done in fun and jest.

If you accept Arthur, please let me know in advance. You will need a microphone and speakers. I will help you connect to the server if you need help.

One more thing...

If you would like to hear such a debate (for fun only of course) please post and give us your input.

We are talking about using ventrilo, a live voice server, for this debate. Anyone can listen in on it.

FYI there's already a quite popular firearm related (with an NFA emphasis) chat channel established on IRC. If you already have a IRC client set up (MIRC, Pirch, Trillion, etc) you can connect to the irc.wasteland.org server, and join #guns. If you're not IRC savvy you can still join in via the CGI and Java interfaces through the web. Here's a link for that. Web interface for irc.wasteland.org! The channel is open 24/7, and there's almost always someone online.

Personally, I hate the voice chat stuff. Most folks still use dial-up internet, and the quality is still pretty poor. Plus with the text chat, you don't miss any conversation when you leave the room to get a cold one (you can scroll back).

I am not interested in the spam filled IRC junk channels.

What I am talking about is people interested in the Thompson SMG and using a voice server dedicated to just that, just one night a week.

Arthur, are you up to the challenge/fun?

At least post yea or nea.

I must respond because the poster of the IRC info gave me this link.

I take offense, sir, to your name calling. I am the administrator of cornbread.com, and one of the two server admins on irc.wasteland.org. For someone who hasn't been to our network and our channel, you have a lot to say.

SPAM filled? Never once in many years have we seen a spam-bot. I count nearly 30 clients connected nightly in #guns right now that are all gun owners. One bot, mine, and it's there for !seen functions mostly. No SPAM, unless you consider the discussions that take place SPAM. The design merits and inspiration of the mp44 comes to mind as a recent topic.

Junk channel? What qualifies a channel as something worth more than junk? Is it the number of clients? The number of chatters at one time? The ability/inability to maintain a decent conversation 24/7? I suppose your experience leads you to calling EFNet or Undernet, possibly even DALnet channels junk by default, which I wouldn't argue with. However, we created this network eight years years ago with the explicit intention of avoiding that environment. Having not joined our channel or network, and having absolutely no point of reference for the group of people you just insulted, you might just stick to "I don't want to" rather than projecting insults and falsehoods concerning your reasons.

If you want a REAL challenge, try exposing yourself to the open discourse of several well-educated gun owners. There are more than one Thompson owner in #guns on irc.wasteland.org, and I dare say there are some that know quite a bit more than the average fellow. I'm sure they can give you a run for your money all day long. However, I realize this was originally a challenge to another user. I can moderate a discussion if you wish, in #guns, that would have you two an entirely captive audience. No SPAM or junk there either, unless the debating parties can't produce material worth reading.

Of course, you can also stick to your voice ideas. Nothing wrong with that.

Cornbread:

Uh....welcome! What's with the flame?

Take offense? Name calling? Read the post again (and don't read so much into what John is saying). I don't think John mean't your particular channel, just the vast majority in general.

What kinda Thompson do you have?

Sorry, I opted for a DLO 1919A4 when it came to the "period gun" of the time. Yes, it's NFA, but no, it's not a Thompson. Sometimes I wish I had bought one when I was in the buyin' mode, there were many about for reasonable sums. However, I had the belt-fed bug at the same time, as well as some significant-other influence. Seen "Dr. Strangelove"? I do need a golf bag...

I suppose I just take exception to people who generalize as a whole. It was nice to see a plug for my services, but it wasn't so nice to see those services take a beating immediately afterwards. I appreciate John's lack of desire to conduct this debate outside of IRC. Again, I just don't like generalizations. IRC is a good part of my life (bleh) at times, and sometimes it needs defendin'. I think it works wonders for the social aspect of the Internet, but it can suck just as bad as e-mail if you don't work at it.

Enough, this is about Thompsons! My bad. Someone wanna trade for the DLO? http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif Gotta be a Colt...

Is the DLO an original or is it a copy of an original?

It's a copy of a copy of an original!

Izzy parts, US made side plate. I think early '80s manuf. In .308 now, spare barrel, spade grips, feeds links or belts. It was assembled by DLO though, and it takes a beating well. There is something about sending 250 rds of .308 down range and leaving all your brass in a nice neat pile.

Still taking offers/insults! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

I can fully appreciate the disdain for IRC. If all you've ever experienced is Efnet, Dalnet, and Undernet, you're missing out. Wasteland is sort of run as a private IRC network (only two servers). The #guns on wasteland strays from it charter from time to time, but it is mostly a bunch of good guys (and gals), and there is a large population of NFA owners there (a few with thompsons).

IRC is old technology, but the perk is that it requires little or no throughput or special hardware on the client end. It runs 24/7, and you don't miss anything in a conversation if you step away from the computer for a few minutes.

Arthur, tommorow is Saturday and Sunday follows. Are you going to be there?

Let us know if you plan to be there or not. If you need help with the software or think that dial up will not allow you to get in, you are covered.

Let me know if you need help setting this up, via private e mail.

Nick,

Did you like V.I.P. with Pamela Anderson? http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I got this from a colector. It is my collection of movie prop license plates. She autograpghed it. Now, if I can just get them to give me a Viper! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/blink.gif
