dalbert
While I was at the TATA All Thompson Show and Shoot at Tracie's in August, I realized that I had started to notice dual GEG (George E. Goll) acceptance stamps on M1 Thompsons, in particular. I've observed several with a GEG stamp on the nose, and another stamp above the magazine well. The first one I noticed had kind of a light strike on one of the stampings, so I assumed maybe it was struck again for good measure. (See second photo below) Now, I'm thinking it might have been a matter of process to stamp it twice, though I don't know why. I saw two examples at the Show and Shoot, and I have photos of two more that I'm posting here. There is also one featured on page 174 of Frank Iannamico's American Thunder III. The two pictured below, and the one featured in ATIII are Savage M1's. Does anyone have insight as to why these were stamped twice? Adg105200
It seems to be fairly common on the M1 although I'm not sure why either. I've seen it on a fair number of receiver nose sections I've had, like the one below. Andrew
NavyEngineer
I don't know why they were stamped twice, but my M1 Thompson also has the two GEG stamps as shown in the photos above.
Petroleum 1
My M1A1 is double stamped. No idea why
Taliaferro
You will also see more stamps for GEG on trigger housings under the butt stocks. Tracie

bug
Is there a chance that one stamp or the other was deemed to be "in the wrong place"? The parts sheets designate not only the letter code but also the location of the mark. Interesting. Bob D
Taliaferro
Because the stamp was used on several parts, my guess is that each part was inspected and approved. Then reinspected afterassembly and restamped. Tracie
Merry Ploughboy
Whenever I read of what appears to be a gratuitous repetition I'm reminded of a "Humor In Uniform" entry in "Readers Digest" many years ago. In a Marine barracks bathroom (head?) a cost conscious individual had posted a sign over a paper towel dispenser. The sign said, "Why Use Two When One Will Do?" Another individual had handwritten in response, "For gracious living."
dalbert
The M1's that members have posted with double stamps since my original post all appear to be Savage manufactured. Does anyone have a Bridgeport manufactured M1 with this mark? David Albertdalbert@sturmgewehr.com
NavyEngineer
David, I didn't post a photo of my M1 with the two GEG stamps, but it was built by Savage.
Adg105200
Also, does anyone have a M1 or M1A1 without 2 stamps? If so, Savage or AOC; and what serial range? I wonder if was started (or ended) at a certain serial number/range. It seems like more have 2 stamps than not. And it is definitely not because of light strikes because it seems most have 2 solid stamps. Also, on a side note; I think I've even seen a GEG stamp inside a receiver section but I can't confirm it right now. David,Is there a way to add a poll to this post? lightguy
Two stamps.Mine was the one at the Hill show that had a stamp through the finish. An non-arsenal refinished gun.One of the stamps was phosphated over. Near the mag well. The other stamp, near the barrel, has the finish broken. I assume after phosphating. Possibly the reason for two stamps. The newer strike was very light on mine and might be easy to polish off if the gun was refinished.
