This was my friday afternoon project. Been thinking about something like this for a while. Its a little clam shell that locks onto the factory lyman sight and lets you mount a red dot without making any permanent or even simi-permanent changes to the gun. Originally I was thinking to either unscrew the factory sight or drive out its big pivot pin. But I wanted to try avoiding removing the sight if I could.

This clamshell idea is still in MK-1 alpha status. I really just wanted to check first how tight it would lock up before I sank too much time into it. Turns out it works really well. The next step is to refine it and make it less tall. I'm thinking that with a microdot with an aimpoint T1 style base or an RMR, it can get it tucked down much lower and sleeker. Then after that, try to knock it out in aluminum.

Does anybody else have any red dot mounts they've done for the thompsons? I'd like to steal some ideas if any are floating around :D .

I made something similar a while ago. I found that the combination of the high of line of sight of an optic mounted on the rail plus the low comb of a Thompson stock made for non-ergonomic sighting for me. The fit may be better for people that have a different body than mine.

Best of luck with your project.

MHO, YMMV, etc.

With the way it is now, the little red dot about as high off the top of the gun as the 500yd setting on the adjustable iron sight. I'm thinking with a T1 style mount, it'll get the dot down around the 300yd height, and an RMR down around 100yd. I haven't actually gotten to try it yet. All my wood is off and hanging up for refinishing.

But definitely with this style mount and then a set of rings and a scope, it would be way to high.

I've got the Richardson mount and a red Dot on one of my guns. Works nice. A caution.. With the trouble keeping a standard rear sight on a Thompson, the Kahr rear sight may want to come off pretty easy with the extra mass your design has.. Though it's a neat idea... With the screw on base Kahr uses now id just replace the whole thing...

I listened to the hive. The mk2 model replaced the whole rear sight with a little mounting plate for venom/fastfire type red dots. Its much shorter than the original sight.
