I like this M 50 but would like it better if it worked more

Thanks for a very informative forum. I just got the tax stamp for a very nice M 50- blued, first year production, I think, former police gun. 4 digit serial #. I would put her at 90% plus. I think it has mostly been sitting since the 40's.

The gun came without a firing pin, so I put one in of titanium with a new spring. That, plus the action bar spring were the only changes besides clean & lube.

It came with one parkerized 12 round magazine, I guess GI. With Rem 230 grain factory ball she was 100 % semi auto, and in the two round bursts ( 2 in the mag ) which were all I could do where I was shooting. I also got a 30 round from Keystone. Will not feed when you put 30 in. About 20 the limit.

Shot a match where full auto ok yesterday. With new repo 20 rounders ( from Sarco) and the original 12 constant Failures to feed. The round hits the feed ramp and the case head stuck about half way up the bolt face. The firing pin not protruding and causing this. This will good reloads of 230 plated bullets and 4.8 to 5.1 Red Dot. The jam is easy to clear

HERE IS THE KICKER. With 15 20 rounds of the reloads mentioned above and that Keystone mag she fuctions like its brand new !!! 3- 5 round plus bursts no problem. Very accurate- she is a honey.

Any suggestions much appreciated. If i could get her going with a full or close to 30 this would help in these matches. Please recall the 20 round ones are brand new but repo.

Thanks gents

One other thing. I am trying to post a photo but I'm not the greatest computer guy. The feed ramp seems to be in two parts so to speak. There is a lower portion, then a gap of about 1/ 16th " then an upper portion. If someone could post a photo of the feed ramp the way it is supposed to be I'll say thanks.

If the stock 12s work, the gun works.

My Reising is very sensitive to overall length of the cartridge, yours may be as well. That might explain the issues with your reloads

The aftermarket 20 round mags are not generally well regarded. Expect issues with them.

Call Keystone and talk to Joe about any issues with your 30 rounders. He will walk you through them.

Thanks. I agree about repo 20 rnds. Thing of it is, the 12 round original does not work on full auto. If you get a chance please send a picture of your feed ramp. I'm trying to see if someone has messed with mine The only thing that works 100% on full auto is the 30 rounds Keystones with 15- 20 only loaded

Gentlemen thanks for this info. .010 makes a difference- wild but I believe it. I'm loading 5.1 Red dot with speer cases, w- w primers and 230 Gr Berry's plated bullets. Think that is ok or should I switch powder?

still learning but it looks like a given gun will function semi auot but choke with the same loads & mags full auto. Has this been your experience ?

  • 2 weeks later...

I went through the same problems with my M50. Never expected function problems - mg's on TV never jam (LOL). My feeding problems were caused by the magazine well not holding the mags high enough. By pushing up on the mag bottom, feeding would improve. Got a new one from Keystone Arms - problem solved. Now it feeds with reloads or commercial ball ammo. I also replaced the magazine springs in my factory 20 rounders after taking them apart and polishing the followers. With my five Keystone 30 rounders, I had to adjust the followers with careful bending, and polished the front and back follower legs. Also replaced all the springs on the gun. Now the thing runs perfectly. Dealing with issues seems to be a rite of passage for Reising owners.

My journey from start to finish is detailed in my forum topic 'Reising Blues'. Most valuable is the posts from more experienced site members - many of their suggestions were implemented.

Thanks for your reply. I got 2 new magazine wells and that is the next try. I put in a 2 piece bumper plug and also a new hammer spring. Do you think all those little springs should be replaced, too? is that hard to do?

The jam is always the same. The round goes about 1/ 2 way up the feed ramp and the case head is about half way up the bolt face. Easy to clear but annoying and intermittant

The new Keystone 30 round mags fit very precisely in the existing magazine well but the WW 2 12 round and repo 20s are a sloppy fit.

Also the 30 round magazine I've had about a month works better than the ones I just got. Do the springs have to " break in " maybe. They wont feed more than 20 or so.

Last, i've been using very little oil as per the manual. has this been your experience that a little is better. I heard too much slows her up

If you push up on the mag when firing, does that improve feeding? What you describe sounds like the mag isn't up enough, but can't say that for sure. The new recoil spring helped; I could tell the round was being pushed harder. Replace the mag springs also. My factory mags had weak ones compared to the new Christies.

Thanks for writing. I am going to try pushing the mag up when I experiment more this weekend. I have a new repo mag well from Nmrich with a new catch and a GI mag well from Keystone with a new catch so I'll try that as well. I'm thinking if this does not work I'll ship this off to Bob Naess in NH he is supposed to be good at this. Any other ideas welcome
