mp34 what do i have

recent purchase. curious what i all have. Bob Naess's name was given as the refinisher of this Mp34. Im not sure if he did any other things to it? (seller didnt have a copy of the invoice)

 

form 4 says Steyr M-1930, year on the gun is 1934. Steyr is listed as the maker. The chamber looks good, so im not sure if it was a dewat or not, but its very clean if it was. Its a large mag well, but im told 9mm Para. runs very well using the larger mags. Gun comes with a spare 9M barrel. I am assuming the gun is a 9mm Mauser gun and that's the original barrel. I am not sure if the M1930 stock belongs on the gun or not. I believe the gun to be a MP34 with a 1930 stock/trigger group ? Cant find a pic of the Austrian mark, but it was marked small with a 34 next to it.

In my opinion the gun is an MP30 with an MP34 topcover. Topcovers are not serialized so give no indication of provenance. The receiver serial number indicates it to be a late manufacture gun, therefore close to the end of the years of MP30 production and it would have the Austrian stamp and the '34 date. The factory caliber would be 9S. The stock and trigger frame with the trigger guard safety are MP30.

An MP30 topcover would be correct to fit to this gun.

Intermixing MP30 and 34 parts was very evident amongst the kits imported into the US years ago, and clearly was common during and after the war. The longer mags used with 9S, 9M, .30M will function with the shorter 9P so swapping barrels for use of different calibers was very simple and clearly practiced. Putting an MP34 topcover onto an MP30 receiver was equally simple. I had a couple MP34s in the shop years ago with MP30 topcovers installed on them and the owners bought MP34 topcovers to replace them.

While much harder to locate these days parts for these guns are still able to be found.

looking at mp34 top covers- all I see have the safety slot in them, while my gun does not. could there have been an intermediate transition version? with a mp30 charging slot and the mp34 top cover safety? (it would seem odd to have 2 safeties on the gun though)

If you want to play with the 9M barrel, Starline makes 9mm Win Mag brass which can be shortened to 25mm. Don't have any load info but 9x23 data should give you a starting point

i wont ever shoot it in anything other than 9mm parabellum

 

if the spare 9mauser barrel is original would it have the guns serial # on it?

 

what is a 9m barrel worth? if its not original to the gun id probably sell it

 

why do some of the top covers have the bolt handle safety notch installed and others dont?

 

heres a MP30 top cover w/o the sliding safety on the top from Apex. it has the safety slot cut into the side though like a mp40

as for finish--ive seen others claiming to be original finish that have the same dull black finish on it. I know mine is refinished, but im not sure the finish is incorrect...at morphys yesterday the one had the same finish as far as I can tell.

Holy Moses man why did you not ask 300 questions to the guy or guys you bought it from..lets see 9mm. refinished with different parts. Its a Mutt German 9mm full auto shooter win win. Not something on the mantel place at Karinhall. grabbed up by Col. Jones and smuggled back in a gunny sack.Like that supposed MP-36 Prototype or whatever they called it.

 

We do what we do today on all this stuff because of wack job prices.And 99% of us can't afford todays going rate. When MP-40's had been $500 bucks and Thompsons a few grand it was real fun. half the times we did not even question origin and parts and finish.

 

And most who bought stuff 30 years ago don't worry about it. You stepped up and bought a Mutt German gun. everyone has done that, It is all the rage.

 

it is what it is now. Any input from 20 players who did finish what parts, what will work, can barrel be right. is all opinion and comment now.Like my post here.
