gijive
Dan, Why does the winding-key not turn until the last round is gone?....PhilPhil, The winding key on a Thompson drum doesn't turn while the gun is firing and the rotor is pushing the bullets around the spiral tracks. The clock spring is unwinding internally. Once there are no more bullets being pushed against the bullet stops at the mouth of the drum, the rotor expends the remaining spring energy by spinning around a couple of more turns causing the attached key to rotate with it. That is why it is important to wind the drum to the appropriate number of clicks so that too much or too little spring tension isn't applied. In the case of Dan only placing 55 rounds in the 100 round drum, he probably had to guess at the proper number of winding clicks to get the rounds through the drum without placing an undue amount of tension on the spring which would have caused several quick rotations of the rotor once the bullets were expended. Too much tension on the spring without the proper number of rounds for the drum is not great for the spring. Dan has fired enough Thompsons with various drums to know how much to wind the drum without the suggested number of rounds in it.
