Looking a correct violin case for my sbr'ed chopper.

Recommended Posts

Photos? Anybody use a violin case to transport their Thompson? I would like to see how the dismounted gun is stored in the case. How big the case needs to be, etc. Are they actually custom built for the gun and not really an instrument case? Mine has a 10.5 bbl, cutts, vertical grip with a 1928 buttstock. My 1927 and parts should be here next week. Pictures then.
Found this 15 year old post.

Yeah, look for one:> I got mine on EBAY, for 18.bucks, without violin..........One would figure the outside of the case would be leather lined, and the old clips, locking the lid to the body would be typical 1920-1930s.

....The photo you found above, shows how the guy made adjustments inside to hold various parts of the gun.....I did the same, and so can you.....Finding the right violin case is half the fun, the other half is making the adjustments inside to make it work.....

opps, don't forget to make a place inside for your ATF form-4.

Hey look at this one!

A baritone Ukulele case would be the right size, and maybe easier to fit the tommy gun into with drum and other accessories, since they are deeper.

Or maybe a tenor case, like this

If you didn't mind a newer reproduction case - which would be more robust than an actual vintage violin case - I've had my eye on something like this. I believe it was made by ThugCase for a suppressed Thompson, but they don't show this particular model on their website. I can't speak to what it's like to do business with this company, so I'd be curious to hear from anyone who has. At any rate, this might give you an idea how to fit the firearm and all its accessories if you make a case of your own.

I’ve found one that’s not really vintage but not new either that will be a good case to experiment on. An 80 year old case wouldn’t necessarily be the best choice for a 14 lb chunk of steel and walnut plus a little ammo. Never heard of thugcase before. I don’t know if it esthetically works for an AR. A cas shooter that I used to know would travel all the way from NC to Hawaii to compete in their sass state match. He used a lockable golf club bag case to legally transport his guns [2 shotguns, a rifle and 2 single action revolvers] halfway around the world. His parents lived there. He was good and won several times much to the chagrin of the local shooters. I’m still waiting for the postNL truck to show, wonder if it will be brown too?

Got sniped 3x on my inexpensive case search, eBay and good will sites. Punched in alligator case and ukele cases came up? Think I'm getting this one. It should be long enough. Costs a little more but that brown gator looks so much cooler. Hawaiian mafia maybe? Aloha, ‘you dirty rats’.

Here is some nice types of foam for the new lining you will make, and they sell adhesive to layer the foam and cover it with fabric as well.

https://www.foambymail.com/neoprene-rubber.html

https://www.foambymail.com/GR-_BLACK/gym-rubber-black.html

https://www.5ssupplies.com/custom-thick-foam-tool-organizers-2ft-x4ft/

And an easy way to add snaps without special tools for straps inside the new case.

Now to figure out how to reinforce the handle to accommodate the weight.

Thanks for the websites. I think the screw/snaps are a great idea. My uke case will be here next week so I’ll see whats what then. Rather than foam I was thinking of using walnut blocks with an insert for a 2nd layer rather than using the top to hold stuff. I really like this idea. No drum magazine but I’ve got an older Auto Ordnance .45 1911 that would look good sitting in it. Whoever built this one did a super job.

Gordon Herigstad case, they are the best, unfortunately, no longer made.

You can make one yourself that puts anybody else's to shame. It's easy to do.

A violin case works fine if you get the old wood coffin type, that's what I used to French line one for my M1.

Make sure to "strengthen" all the seams and mounting points though.

Obviously, my final layout changed. The last shot shows the reinforced handles from behind.

These guns slip together and come apart way too easy, at least mine does.

All I have to do is depress the spring button under the rear, pull apart till it stops, squeeze the trigger and it comes completely apart. Just slips back together.

Nice work tray. How are the case ends of your straps mounted? Are there extra screws in the bottom or are they glued into the case? Just a suggestion, acorn nuts would look nicer than the exposed screw threads on your handle reenforcement and would be less damaging to your gun if you were to accidentally bump into them. Hopefully the case for my build will be here by Friday.

Hey, I like the idea of the acorn nuts, I'm gonna do that!

The straps are securely screwed into the wood but covered by the lining.

Thank you for the kind words.

What kind of case did you go with?

I’m waiting on my alligator baritone ukulele case to arrive. Hope it looks as nice as in the photos. Still waiting for the 1928 stock slide to arrive from Netherlands.

This is gonna be so cool!

Make sure to post pictures of your progress, please.

I looked at getting a real alligator case when I started my project, but $1k+ for real alligator was a little out of the question. lol

I believe I'm all in at around $100?

My case came today. Looks nice, very sturdy. I removed the center divider storage as it was held in with screws on the sides. Planning on using the same screws and holes on my mods. I’ll have to dismount the gun all the way to get it to fit but it doesn’t need tools to take apart. Should have room for 5-6 mags too. Still waiting on my slide. It’s supposed to be in the US but is being held up in customs due to covid backlogs.

Started cutting aluminum and walnut pieces and figuring out where things can go.

Will stain my walnut inserts and start gluing felt today. I made lightening cuts on the underside of the inserts too.

Gluing felt is a pain. Tried 2 different glues the fabric store suggested with mediocre success, went back to old contact cement. Think I’m going to add some dark green accents.

...the fun begins!

With the depth you have with that case you can make good use of the top for mounting too.

You're running into the same issues I had to solve also. I decided to keep the upper as one unit and the lower as one unit so all I had to do is slip them together for assembly. I made my "stuff" work around my mounted gun last.

I'll be watching this thread.

Have the big end about done. I didn’t like the big walnut blocks that I had on the stock side so I'm changing things a little. Also have four 20 rd cardboard repro vintage .45acp boxes coming. I’ll see if I can squeeze them in. Add a little color too.

It’s coming along, took a while for me to decide on how to do the upper but this is what I’ve come up with. Thought that I’d add my Savage, Got a few more blocks to secure and covering everything with felt. Going to add some snap straps to secure the Savage and 1911. The lid compresses against the upper to hold it tight.

Think that all my walnut inserts and straps are done and tomorrow I’ll start gluing the felt. I want green under the Savage and 1927 upper and brown under the 1911 and Thompson bbl. If I can find 6 magnets with counterbored holes in the center I want to inlet and screw them to the aluminum in the open space below the 1911. The felt will hide them. I will have a 1911 and Savage mag stuck to them sitting there. I didn’t like the washers so I built a couple of 1 inch walnut discs to secure the ends of the straps. Letting the stain dry now.

  • 2 weeks later...

Except for the felt on the backside of the top and a few loose pieces of the yellow liner that are loose it’s done. But I’m still waiting for the stock slide.
