Early Savage 1928 Serial S-17738 Comes Home

Recommended Posts

Yes both your vertical grip and buttstock on this 17k Savage appears to be Colt ones, the shape of the grip and its lack of marking are very strong indicators. For the buttstock, the lack of sling swivel and possibly an anchor mark on the front

section below the buttstock latch would be the confirmation.

Well I know now my stock and hardware is correct...Its triple matching .My pistol grip may or may not be correct and the foregrip is not marked with an S
and maybe its wood that was supposed to go on a Colt?

Indochinavet,

The front pistol is definitely a Colt grip, but the buttstock is Savage made. Only the earliest Savage buttstocks had the assembly number stamped in three places (wood, butt plate, and slide latch). They stopped numbering the slide latches as production increased with the demand for guns as WWII progressed. Remington made Colt buttstocks did not have the assembly number stamped on the slide latch.
