SVDM

Recommended Posts

The Mob Museum is really fun, especially the fact that they have part of the SVDM wall with the bullet holes in it. They even have a Tommy Gun simulator so you know what it feels like to shoot a real one! Too bad they also talk about having an M-1 Thompson that was owned by Jack McGurn who died in 1936 but I won’t burst their bubble on that until I’m back home in Vegas. They also have two 1921 models as well. Definitely worth the trip to learn about the SVDM and crime in general, plus they have an operational speakeasy in the basement.

Thanks for sharing. I can't help but think the SVDM case would have been solved had the authorities questioned the two musicians, Joe and Jerry, who witnessed it. Well, nobody's perfect.

The Chicago PD may have regarded it as a "Public Service Murder" and decided to solve it after the next Ice Age

My daughter is studying forensic science at university, so the Colonel Goddard story is of interest to her...

She still thinks I am 'strange' having an interest in Thompson guns... but then again not many daughters have fathers who served in the French Foreign legion, as well as a reserve unit of the British Army explosive ordnance disposal for many years, worked as a private investigator and spent most of her life in North Africa, 'fighting' in the original 'war on terrorism'.

I guess people with our interests are not the usual 'run of the mill' sort of guys, well not in Europe anyway, and I make no apologise for that.

Stay safe

Richard

My comments were a veiled reference to the classic 1959 romantic comedy film "Some Like It Hot" of which an integral part was inspired by the SVDM. "Joe" was played by Tony Curtis and "Jerry" was played by Jack Lemmon. The female lead was played by Marilyn Monroe.

Didn't get the Some Like it Hot reference. I haven't watched that movie in years and there's only one scene from it that's carved into my memory. (You get one guess) but my comment about Chicago PD's probably response to a public service murder still stands.

I just think that it is great that so many people honor this day year after year. Without it, our Thompson's would not be so noteworthy. I for one shall take mine for a spin on that special day.
