Fond Farewell,

Recommended Posts

I bid you all a fond farewell,

I have decided that I have better things to do than try than understand the diatribe of a large number of posts on this forum.

Not withstanding the fine efforts of Nick to keep it sane, some do not wish it so and thus make it unbearable for others.

The last staw has been the unrelenting attacks on others real Thompson collectors and researchers whom do now not even post on this forum any longer.

In particular have been the personal e-mail attacks on me a the result of the mistake I made in one post I made about a certain "spare parts tin".

I did not really believe that pesons could be so vindicive or so petty and I now have real serious doubts if some of the posters even have ever seen a real Thompson let alone actually own one.

There is a degree of decorum that exists amoungst serious collectors.

It is in many respects, almost like a code, or craft. It is very obviously absent lately and seems non existant in Ohio.

I have been a member for a number of years of a larger forum specialising in Lugers, which I also collect. In the five years I have been part of that forum I have only ever seen real professionalism and have never seen such petty issues, as some, and I might add. a very few, raise here. They, the knockers, have simply "dumbed down" the quality of this forum.

Have you noticed that many of the real serious Thompson Collectors now longer post. Ask yourself why. It is pretty obvious.

I will still those serious Thompson collectors at the TCA show and the SAR show and other Thompson meetings,

Kia'ora

Murray

I am sorry to see you leave this site. However I share the same observations as you. I have suspected for a long time some of the comments are being made by people who don’t have, never had, and never will have a Thompson of any model. The high self-esteem of some is overbearing and at the very least difficult to take even in small doses. The Colt Thompson’s will never again be $ 250. – They have become collectors art and continue to bring higher prices, never again to been seen as an inexpensive gun.

Certain people complain about the price, as if that will lower the price. So to that type, I say, “Get a Life” If you want a 21 – it will never get cheaper than right now!

The internet has allowed the type of person who used to hang around the local gun store, when he wasn’t over at the car dealer lot tire kicking, telling the war stories of his vast gun knowledge, bring this to gun web sites and waste everyone’s time demonstrating their vast and undocumented knowledge. There is one saving grace; it has given the gun shops and car dealers some relief.

The sad thing is that we seen the knowledgeable people like yourself leave the board, and with them go knowledge. I see the same thing-taking place on other gun boards. It seems the boards have become a place where “The unwashed” want to attack the seasoned collectors about everything that’s posted. After a while no one wants to respond to the Knuckleheads. And the Knuckleheads have the board to them selves.

This was a professional site, with outstanding information on the Thompson guns. It was the place one could find the answer to a question. The question being answered by long time collectors of Thompson’s. But not anymore, There are those who will answer the question even if they don’t know the answer.

I question why anyone would want to see the photo of another’s recent Thompson purchase. Unless the photos are of excellent quality, which most are not, they serve only a childish desire to see a photo of a gun. Unless, the gun has some interesting features.

It has been a pleasure seeing your excellent contribution to the board, Hope to meet you at the SAE show in December.

There are a lot of good people on this board with outstanding knowledge as it applies to Thompson’s. I hope they prevail.

Murray,

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences and I can relate to your reactions. I'm also a member of several other gun boards, one of them dealing with Lugers, none of these come even close to this forum in terms of personal "shit-throwing". I have learned a lot from attending this forum and I hope I will keep on doing so, but I could do without all the flaming from individuals putting themselves on pedestals.

Gentlemen,

Let's try to make this a serious forum and leave personal conflicts and differences behind. Now let's see if this thread can prove that we're willing to do so.

Respectfully,

Balder

This is a very sad day in the Thompson world. Murray I have to agree 100% that several of the ones degrading a true and serious historian for trying to give us all a chance at a long lost item, are probably tire kickers. I know it is hard not to jump in a defend a friend, I've been biting my tounge too. Don't go. You have provided much information in these years. I will see you in August and December at the shows.

Your friend.

Chris...maybe this could be worked in the FAQ/board rules somehow?

Murray...don't go...just stay above it where you belong! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I am extremely saddened and disturbed by you leaving us. You have contributed so much to our pool of knowledge. Wished you would stay. Murray, stay Damnit!.. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/mad.gif......and keep swinging ! Don't be a wet noddle....What if the Japs got to invade New Zealand, would'nt you have stood your ground, and have been a 'Ft.Drum' ? (for those who don't know,it was the Concrete Battleship of the Phillipines, and was not taken)

You and the other guys who know the Thompson so well, are the 'Concrete Battleship' of the Thompson world. The rest of us Tommy enthusiasts, fall to rumor stories, speculation and b.s. when trying to figure out this & that of the Thompson SMG.

Without you guys, there is no order and authority in this world of error...............jw

Murray,

I whole heartedly join in with the others and encourage you to stay with us. I think it is your firearms knowledge, quick wit and the photos of your great weapons collection that keeps many of us entertained on this board!

Speaking as one who has had the pleasure of meeting you on several occasions, I know that you are a gentleman of the old school and many of those that have attacked you would not make a pimple on your butt.

If you do leave us it is understandable, but most regretful, and it will be a great loss to this board. The experience that you have gained and shared with us from years of collecting Thompsons outside of the United States cannot be replaced and I hope that you'll pop in now and again. ( At least once a week is good ! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif )

I look forward to seeing you, Gordon Herigstad, Merle Bitikofer, Mike Hensley and many of the others from this board at the December S.A.R. Show in Phoenix. We can all have a large container ( or two http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/tongue.gif ) of a dark brown frosty carbonated beverage ( that covers a lot of choices http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif ) and share some great times as in the past.

Until then..................

Best regards from your friend

Randy

Murray,

It is sad to lose a valuable member. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/sad.gif I hope that you might reconsider. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/huh.gif

Not all of us are out to nit-pick every little detail on everything.

Besides, I love your collection!

Sorry to see Murray go, but I can see his point entirely. I pop in to see what's going on about every day, but the truth is that this board has become far too much chaff in with the decreasing kernels of wisdom. It's become just another "bickering board" -- a common occurance in the life of such forums.

Sorry to see you go, Murray, but I understand. Please let me know if you find a board that's more about Thompsons, without the political rantings and personal attacks.

Regards,

DC

Murray,

I personally have enjoyed the sharing of knowledge, and the fact that you have shared fine photos of your collection.

The sampling of this board is small in comparison to the true picture. However without this board and the wisdom so freely given, many would not have progressed as far as what we have.

Hopefully you will reconsider, but if you must, go in peace.

I hope to one day meet you, and some of the other fine members of the list at one of the TCA shows.

Murray, I know how you must feel, and I apoligize for the actions of another. I agree with your post completely, as do many. You and I have only corresponded by email, but you seem to be quite the kindred spirit, and I hope, wish rather, that you can somehow stay on board. If that isn't a possibility, I wish you and your Family the BEST, good fortune, and perhaps, just maybe, we will meet someday.

I don't know who wrote emails to Murray, but they should know the old saying- "Don't EVER put any comment in written form that you wouldn't want ANYONE in the world to read!" http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif

Stay with us Murray!

Wow, I am still a really new member here, but it would be a shame to lose any knowledgeable people. Guys like me need guys like you to learn from. There are those of us who want to learn about the beloved Thompsons - so we can carry on the tradition and eventually pass down the valuable information we get out of a great forum like this one.

So all of you RKIs PLEASE STAY for the benefit of all.

Murray,

I feel your pain brother, see ya again at the next SAR.

BTW, I had a rape investigation, high risk stop (stolen occupied), stolen vehicle recovery and a death investigation today at work.

Life is way too short to put up with idiots, but they seem to find me. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/laugh.gif

After careful consideration of the 20 odd posts from my earlier message and after viewing the dozens of really nice emails I have received today, I have reconsidered my position and come to the conclusion that "I may be cutting off my nose to spite my face".

What has persuaded me has been the reaction from you all, coupled with Nicks' reaction (not surprising) and a couple of e-mails from very young interested "really want to be Thompson collectors" who have told me how much they had learned from me and you all on this forum.

No one mentioned in posts or depatches sent me the email. In fact it was fairly anonymous, but nasty and was from some one who obviously reads the forum and holds a grudge but I do not believe it was any of you all so rest assured.

Which should remind us all of just how many people do read this forum and how careful we all should be.

So,like it or not, I'm back, warts, pimples and all, but Hey!

What about us policing ourselves, no off subject subjects, no abuse of others regardless of how we feel, lets talk Thompson not twaddle!, Drums not drivel,

Mags not madness and Colts not crap!

If it's not about Thompsons don,t post

Yours sincerly

Murray
