Lewis Manuals & Other Written Material

Recommended Posts

Gents,

The UK gentleman who supplied me with the BREN material also included some Lewis stuff. I can post some of it here if David tells me where and how to store it.

Balder

Balder,

You can post them in this thread, and a soon as I can, I'll add a pinned reference thread containing the images. I have, or have had previously, many Lewis Gun manuals, and have images I can post, as well.

Thanks!

Balder,

That would be great. I'm sure Dave will show the way.

PS Does your friend happen to have a Lewis gun carrying handle at a reasonable price.

Here are the different Lewis Gun manuals I have had in my manual inventory over the last 9 years of selling manuals and books.

This is the earliest example I've encountered (1915):

Operation and Tactical Use of the Lewis Automatic Machine Rifle, published by the D. Van Nostrand Company, 1917:

This one was published by Savage Arms, circa 1917-1918:

Savage Arms Aircraft Lewis Manual, circa 1918:

Royal Air Force Lewis Gun Manual, 1919 (This manual was formerly in service with the Finnish Air Force):

A plate from within the above manual:

Another batch of Lewis Gun manuals were printed in World War II, with one being a British Small Arms Training Manual (SAT Vol. 1, Number 20), and others were printed by various private companies, since the Lewis was commonly issued to the British Home Guard.

SAT 1-20, 1939:

.300 Lewis Machine Gun for the Home Guard, published by The Bravon Ledger Co., 1940:

The Lewis Gun Mechanism Made Easy, published by Gale and Polden, circa 1941-1944

Complete Lewis Gunner, published by Gale and Polden, circa 1941

I have at last 8 other manuals in my collection that include Lewis Gun content, along with other weapons. If there is any interest, I can post pictures of them, as well.

David,

Very impressive and informative, you seem to be well equipped with manuals. May I ask what kind of guns you're into?

Balder

Balder,

I'm into almost every firearm on this website, with particular focus on the Thompson. I also collect and sell the paper items associated with firearms. My collection of firearm manuals and other associated paper is probably the largest in private hands.

Balder,

I'll looking for a complete anti-aircraft sight if he should happen to have a set.

Dalbert great post really informative as ever.

I have another publication to add to the list by

The Birmingham Small Arms Co Ltd Birmingham England (BSA)

I reckon its a 1916 publication (circa 1915) given the dated pullout at the rear.

Similar plates to my Savage 1915 publication.

Different pullout to note.

Really pleased to have come across this publication given Birmingham is my home city.

Great addition to my collection which is coming together nicely.

I can show some more manuals if of interest, although I am selling all of the British MG library in order to fund the German library efforts!

Would be nice to see period imagery of the Lewis too.
