john
A good friend was there in 67-68 and drove a supply truck. He hated his M16 and so bought a '28 Thompson for $20.00.It came without a buttstock but had three mags. He carried that in a makeshift rack in the cab of his truck for a year then sold it for $15.00 a couple days vefore he came home.Said he never fired it but bought it for the "Cool Factor". 2ndArmored
Years ago, a former colleague (E5 VN vet) told me about "trading in" his M-16 for a Thompson and carried it for most of the war. It was "a heavy MF" (language cleaned up) but he found that the VC recognized the sound and "respected" it more than they did the 5.56 "What else do you have?" Thinking of that era, I replied "an SKS and an AK" Understandably, he said he never wanted to see another AK again.
GaryKeim
I’m confused about all the hate for the M16. Isn’t it based on the vaunted AR15? Didn’t the M16A1 resolve the issues with the original model? What about the A2 and M4? [i have an M16A1 incoming.]
john
I wasnt there and never possessed an early m16 so I cant say. I do own maybe 8 AR15 rifles in various flavors and live them all. Also have a 28 Thompson with a second ine due in a month or so. Live those too!
