Hello all. I am Tom, new to this site but not new to firearms. I just had a question about the BM-59 and was looking for some opinions.

What do you look for in a BM-59? I see there are several conversions, which I am not referring to. This is about a SA rifle. I'm just trying to do some research on one I might end up with.

Do you have any pictures available? Is this a Beretta, Springfield Armory commercial built BM59 or a USGI SA Garand conversion built rifle?

The later is mainly dependant on who did the conversion and at what level of workmanship that went into it . Some are very well done and some ....well...... not so well done and some were built using demilled Garand receivers welded back together and machined for the magazine feed componants. SA inc. built rifles were built from raw original Beretta made forgings that were partially or totally finished out by Springfield Armory inc., depending who you ask,but these are fine BM59 rifles and are highly regarded, as are Beretta built rifles. Pictures would be helpfull in determining what you have .

Hope this helps......

It would be awhile before I could get pics posted. I believe this is a SA built BM-59 from Beretta parts. The receiver has only the SA stamp on the heel, with nothing on the sides. All other stampings are of PB. The barrel is stamped 1964 03-097-a-1. Sn is in the 00008xx's. The receiver does not look to be welded. The gas tube and oprod are not that of a Garand. No bends or welding. It uses PB BM-59 magazines. The stock has a few small dents in the wood, but no scratches.

It was assembled by SAI from NOS Beretta parts. They're fantastic, get the gun and as many spares as you can ASAP!

That is the plan. I'm just curious about any history of the gun. It is in excellent operating condition and well maintained. One magazine didn't do so well though. Seems it was left in the trunk of a car for a year in anticipation of going to a range and it started rusting. He tried a wire wheel on it, but it is pitted badly in spots. Good news is it's still operational and it is a PB magazine. I might try trading it for a used AR10 magazine if I can.

You would get some one to make that trade easy.BM59 mags a harder to come by than AR10 mags.

Maybe. I see BM magazines out there, they're just pricey. Same can be said about AR-10 magazines right now. $150 for a 20rd mag that only cost $40 2 months ago is ridiculous. Too many profiteers buying the stuff up and immediately reselling at high prices. It only affected >10rd magazines at first, but with the NY laws that just passed, any 5rd mags will end up costing more than a 20rd. I'm not sure how this "only load 7 rounds in a mag" rule will work with a M1.
