Colt Model 1921ac No. 6501 And 6502

Recommended Posts

Anyone out there own No. 6502? This gun and No. 6501 was for sale as a pair in 1977 by Law Enforcement Ordnance of Athens, Georgia. If you have 6502 and have any history on the gun I would be very interested in sharing information that I have on 6501. These guns were more than likely sold to someone as a pair but became separated sometime after that.

If anyone has the LEO listing of the guns (November 1977) I would love to have a copy of the listing. Also, if anyone has information on who might have sold these guns to LEO (earlier in 1977) this would fill in a big gap of the history of these guns.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Ron. I'm not sure about 6502, it may have been an overstamp. It was owned by a PD in New Jersey at one time (according to Hill).

If Fred had these for sale as a pair then he may have bought them from Roger back in late 77 or 78 era?

I have 6501 and Fred rated it as a 93% gun in his November 1991 ad in MGN. I rather think it is 90% at best but I am not good at grading and it has been around 12 years since that rating was made. It has gone through at least 3 different owners since that time. It is a nice Thompson and enjoy the heck out of it.

So it appears that the pair became separated sometime between 1977 and 1991. Ron, do you remember when you acquired 6502 and from whom? This may help me track down the last owner of the guns as a pair.

I suspect that the whoever purchased the set from Cox separated the pair when they were sold. This must have occurred between 77 and 91 as Vollmer only lists 6501 in his 91 advertisment. Or the pair could have went through several owners during that time before being separated.

Need to fill in the gaps in the history of 6501 for these 14 years (1977 - 1991) before going back to the mystery owner in 1976 who sold (or attempted to sell) the gun to Dr. Alf Wyller of Winconsin.

Roger does not mention either of these two Thompsons in his one page Shotgun News sale advertisement on March 15, 1979. I reviewed all the items I received from Roger and found nothing on these two Thompsons. However, I found an advertisement in an April 1984 postmarked envelope from Roger with a listing of guns that shows 21AC NO 7061 at $3500.00 and 28N NO 7062 at $4000.00. I know, wrong pair, but to think twenty years ago you could have bought a pair of consecutive numbered Colts for under 10 grand. WOW!!!!!

I have a Jan. 1978 price list from Law Enforcement Ordnance. It has No. 6501 and 6502 listed as "excellent". Says 6501 came from a private collection and 6502 Passaic NJ police dept. Also has No. 1008 and 1009, 21A in "perfect, restored to new condition, refinished, from the Knoxville,TN police dept." $5000 for the pair. These old price list will make you want to cry.

Found a price list from Aug. 1974.. It has a 1927A No. 6789 and 1921AC No.6790 both in "excellent condition" for $6750.00 Says it is the only known consectutive pair of 27A and 21.

1921A No. 104 excellent from Morgantown, WV police dept. $1875.00

Those were the good old days.

Terry Williams had a lot of "inventory" Colt Thompsons including a few "pairs" over the years. I bought four guns from him, including 27AC #5190, in the mid 1980's. It seems like he had 75 to 80 Colts in his inventory at that time. I had 21A #1234 and tried to find #123 and #12345 without success. That would have been an interesting trio.
