M1 Thumb
Hi, I'm Mike. First off I would like to say sorry if this is in the wrong thread. I'm new to guns. anyway. My father is an old army guy of 20 years and always tells me stories about the "Thumbsmasher" the M1. And for his B-day in a about 5 months I would like to find and buy him an old army M1 garand. I have looked at many gun sites but all this talk of "Mis-matched" and stuff is way6 over my head. I am wondering if anyone here knows a site\dealer I can contact to go about buying a real, complete M1. Anyone have any Ideas? Again sorry for the thread placement. Mike. The1930sRust
Hey, Mike! Love that 8-bang clang. Mine was a gift from CMP, http://www.odcmp.com/ specifically http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm Yes, this is one of the most active weapon forums on the Net, I'd bet. I may more your post later to the non-Thompson forum, but post on!

John Jr
There are some other rules for getting these, you must be a member of an affilated club, shoot in a match and then you can get one from CMP. Read the website and you will find out all you want to know. Lots of paperwork for the CMP but you get a good rifle at a good price. Otherwise its gunbroker, or some other Inet site that can be costly. Try here too and post a WTB ad http://www.sturmgewehr.com/webBBS/semi4sale.cgi or http://www.battlerifles.com Good luck Jr

full auto 45
Also if your a member of the "Thompson Collectors Association" that meets at Tracie Hill's every year, you can buy from the CMP now. Tracie had catalogs at his house last year but they went as fast as he put them out. You can also pick up a good M1 Garand at the local gun shows at a fair price. I have 2 myself, one is 1943 and the other is very late Springfield that I got from a guy that had it in Viet Nam in 1969 & 1970. Only bad thing about it is, he carved his name and USN on one side of stock and the other side has Viet Nam 69-70 on the other.Said he use it on guard duty on ship and when he came back, nobody took it from him and he just walked away with it. M1Brian
The only way to get a real garand and not hear some tall tale to go with it is at the cmp like these guys say. You can also purchase direct from cmp if you live in a bordering state. I live in MI and met cmp's other requirements so instead of ordering it through the mail we went to camp perry ohio and went shopping. All the staff are very knowldgeable and friendly and if you call ahead they will let you know how many rack or service grade rifles they have on display to choose from. They also have serial number lists so you know what year the rifle was made. We took a 30. cal bullet with us. (NOT CARTDRIGE. ARMED GRUADS AT CAMP ENTRANCE) First we checked the muzzle bore with the bullet and rounded up the tight ones. These can be 1 to 5 and still be in the same grade and that bullet dont lie. Then check the action, proof marks and wood grab the one you like best do the paper work and your on your way home with a garand unless you just can't resist some accessories a cmp t shirt or some lake city arsenal ammo if they have it. I reccommend getting 2 garands or another stock if they have one lying around. You are going to want to refinish the dinged up one with 60 years of history and linseed oil on it that come with the gun. After you sand and reoil it you will wish you left it alone. just my opinion M1Brian
