johnson184
I've been looking to buy a STG44, but I've noticed several MP40 tube guns and even a few C&R MP40 (50% more of course than tubes) up for sale. Just curious from those of you with experience in the platform, how reliable is the overall design as soon as you go into mismatched and even tube guns? No big issue? Of course I prefer all original guns, but I'm also worried that I'll end up breaking some matching part and turn it into a mismatched gun in the end. RoscoeTurner
As long as the parts are not worn out either all matching or not, the design is reliable.

Petroleum 1
I have a Wilson tube MP40 and its 100% reliable. No worries
huggytree
My Mp40 is a reweld. Its a degree or 2 crooked even. Yet it has never jammed once. Bolt runs smooth as butter. Shoots perfectly to the iron sights. Ive rarely heard of function issues with a mp40. The Mp40 does suffer from a loose stock and upper to lower twist/ loose but both are repairable. One of the most enjoyable subguns I own. I recommend buying a Wilson tube gun and saving the money. Edited July 10, 2020 by huggytree
TSMGguy
Right, a mismatched or tube gun should run just fine. It might suffer from common but quickly remedied problems, such as weak springs or a worn out extractor. Replace as necessary.

junglewalk
....Very reliable as long as the 9mm ammo used is powerful enough to push the heavy bolt to the rear, past the sear>>>.I have a Charles Erb tube MP-40, since 1992.....Have shot all kinds of 9mm thru it, including my reloads.>.......The best 9mm that I have used was an Isreali lot of SMG 9mm ammo........as the guys above have said, just clean it well after use. DZelenka
The magazines suck. Reliability and fitment is always a question. That being said, with a good magazine and proper ammo (I only shoot 124 these days), it is a very reliable gun.

RoscoeTurner
Mine I have had since 1986, never have had any magazine issues regardless of the manufacturer, same with ammunition, what ever 9mm I use it shoots.

imageaudio
I have an original MP40 all matching because I wanted to purchase some thing I felt would hopefully increase in value. My main concern was breaking the firing pin and so I purchased an FPB bolt from Apex. Actually Ive purchased 2. When the second one arrived it was fairly worn out but Apex exchanged without a question. They are a great company to deal with. The FBP bolt is a fixed firing pin similar to the STEN and just drops in easy as pie. With a fixed firing pin, you run the chance of having an ignition out of battery. I had it happen one time at the end of a long session when the chamber was probably getting hot and dirty. Which brings me to the second problem with the MP40. When you pull it out of the range bag everybody wants to shoot it!!! In my opinion it is the easiest of my sub guns to control and softist shooting I was hesitant to drop the cash that I paid for the gun but have never had buyers remorse or regret the purchase.
