Question about Importation of "Barrels"......

A question was brought up to me about the Importation of "Barrels" for firearms...….

During the discussion, it was brought to my attention (a reminder/about no MG Barrels)……...but at the same time, the question "What about Barrels for semi only weapons such as the SA42 (semi-only MG42) and others in this category ?".

I understand about the BATF Form-6 for importation......and I'm also told that some items are under certain costs limits prior to "Import-Duties".

Is this a point of the "wording" in a law/program/or ?

Is there an exact procedure to Import small quantities of Barrels for personal use (in say an SA42) in a civilian weapon (?).

Can someone with experience let us know the ins and outs of legally importing barrels (or even parts-kits minus receiver) in small quantities for personal use (?).

TIA.

Paperwork, regulations, restrictions are the same for 1 item or 1,000 or them.

That is why most European based brokers won't bother with small qty orders.

"Dual use" barrels have been imported, but then ATF imports branch took a "different view" and stopped approving the form 6's for that importer.

MG barrels and parts also must clear US Customs as well as the Customs office of the country where they are shipping from.

There are countries where the barrels are the controlled item, not the receiver.

You need to understand the legal aspects from an international view and remember that MG parts are not the same as commercial firearms parts.

You don't want to violate international law, or any US laws, the fines are rather large.

The regulations are on the ATF, US Customs and US Commerce web site.

The US State department web site will also have certain restrictions of the countries you can import MG/firearms parts from (called proscribed counties).

There are import duties (tax) that must be paid.

You can certainly go thru the process and see if you have any success.

I would start with the form 6 instructions.

Some individuals have done what you are asking about and brought in items.

Yes, new manufacture commercial barrels can be imported.

APEX has sold Romanian made barrel's with an AKM profile, no gas ports, been thru proof but never fitted.

We also had 5.56 barrels with the Galil profile, no gas ports, been thru proof but never fitted to a gun.

Bob was the importer I referred to in the above post.

He can't get those form 6's approved anymore.

Surplus/inexpensive barrels are attractive and worth the time / effort / expense to bring over.

Barrels with a commercial price tag start to be less interesting when you can have them manufactured here without the inherent risks of the importers world.

Nothing new made coming out of Poland is inexpensive and Romania is isn't a great deal on new production either.

AND, I am not saying "don't try", just do your homework, make the applications to the best of your ability, be clear and truthful and wait for your approval.

Importing can be a BIG pain in the rump and is also often full of risk. There are many pitfalls. And in most cases you need both export and import permits. As others have mentioned, barrels are very difficult (IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE) to import right now. Best to find something state side.
