Maxim crank pin missing cotter pin or roll pin?

Hard to explain (so see picture) but I am missing a roll pin or cotter pin that holds the crosshead and connecting rod together.

I searched every page of the book and found no info, a pic of the part is on

Page 334 of “The Devil’s Paintbrush” by Dolf Goldsmith

“The barrel extension plates with crosshead , connecting rod and crank handle”

But no close up of what type of pin is used.

I would like to use a cotter pin because I have one that fits, but would that work. Thanks for any info. Buck

A simple pin was inserted with a friction fit to retain it. Light peening can be done to the ends if you don't want to make a tight friction fit.

Cotter is just plain unsightly and you won't pass inspection........

Thanks BRMCII. I was unsure if cotter pin would work. I will get a roll pin and try peening the ends with a punch.

I could not find a solid pin so went with a roll pin(tension pin) that was 3/32 by 1/2 inch long. I could have used a couple more millimeters so I could peen the ends. I will have to look at Menards and Home Depot, maybe find longer one in case this one falls out. It was a tight fit, I had to tap it into the hole with a light hammer, so maybe it will work. See pic

That looks sufficient. Keep an eye on it to see if it stays in place. If it moves, take it out and apply a bit of Loctite.
