Posting Your Email Address

Recommended Posts

Boy, funny thing, me posting my email address as

an invitation to take a certain argument off-list during the Tom Hanks thread.

So far, since then I've been hit with 3 seperate virus

attempts...cute ones too, the type that want you to click on a URL website

and they send the exe. file that way.

My favorite was subject header: "Don't you remember me?" From someone called Linda or somthing.

Then a URL you can click on to see her picture.

Okay, that was pretty bush league, but this last one was thanking me for my credit card purchase

of $560, and to click on the URL to see the bill information.

Well, I've learned my lesson... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/sad.gif I guess anyone could just grab the email address off the list....

But I really hope that these are not coming from anyone on the list, a certain person in particula,r who I emailed a statement to through the list telling them exactly what I thought of them. No, that would be malicious and childish... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/mad.gif

Odd though, is it not? http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/unsure.gif

My man Ron,

I don't think so myself, but it's amazing how it started right after.

Just a reminder to all ( and myself) that posting emails can be questionable...

Check out that full auto crossbow Van Helsing use's! Totally rock's and I'm sure it could even be legal in New Yorkistan! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Sniper Rifles... Man, Score me an SVD, no Chinese NDM-86's or Romak wanna-be's.

I need a real Izhmash Dragunov from Russia with a 4 foot barrel!

Be good, Zamm

Posting a full email address is always a bad idea. There are meta-crawlers (servers that run and scan complete websites looking for email addresses) to collect this information. The server owner (or virus writer!) then in turn sells collected adresses to spammers and make quite a bit of money with the "good email" addresses... or uses it to spread the virus.

This is why you will see something like emailNOSPAMaddress@cox.net, where to us, we would remove the NOSPAM and therefore make it a real address. To the crawler, its good too but when they try to use it, it is rejected because the email is bogus.

I guess what I am saying is that no one in this forum did this to you.

Typically, viruses are received:

1) Because someone who knows you and has you in their address book is infected... just because the name doesn't match, doesn't mean anything (forged headers)

2) Something you downloaded or a piece of media you inserted is infected

3) Websites can put viruses in your computer too. Make sure you scan your PC weekly. You would be surprised what it finds in the caches.

4) Lack of a firewall, or its not setup correctly

Always use a virus checker that scans incoming email and this will never happen to you again. I have Norton Antivirus 2005 and it works great.

HTH-

Chris.

DC Chris,

Thanks for the info. I 'm beliveving more and more it is random, because of me posting the full address.

I'll remember that in the future to insert the "nospam" thing.

Yep, luckily I'm running Norton 2005 also, hence, no infections.

Did not realize about the crawlers out there trawling.

Amazing stuff these guys come up with...Man http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/sad.gif

Best, Zamm

Actually, that crawlers are really easy to make. Any college kid with some C and Unix knowledge can do it. No, I never made one.

Basically, it goes to a websites index page (first page) and traverses all of the links it finds recursively (that means every page, every message) and uses some simple unix commands to search the HTML to fit the name@address.(org,com,net, etc) pattern and writes the hits to a file. Simple as that.

Some webmasters (like ours) make this forum register to read (also bypassing mostcrawlers), so again its probably not from here. Imagine if the did that on Strum. Anyone can read it without registration.... and there are email addresses everywhere.

You might want to also use the private messaging system on this board to send a member who may not know your email address your specifics privately. I have used it before here too and it works well.

Chris.

PS - When you use NOSPAM or REMOVETHIS, you typically put a little text afterwards in your posts to tell people to remove the NOSPAM, etc when emailing you... not everyone knows.

Do you ever get those emails that are filled with gibberish letters? I wonder what's up with that.

The emails withthe gibberish are done that way to make it more difficult for you to make a RULE in your email program to reject the email. Not that long ago i had rules with the usualy words like porn and the P word's for example, worked for a time but not much anymore. Now I just let Norton do it and then I go to the blocked list and add asteriks (*) before the @ symbol and have excluded everything from overseas-.de .fr.ru like that.

If you do anticipate the need to openly post an E-mail address someplace, do what all the sharpies do. Set up one of the free throw-away addresses, as at hotmail. Use it once and dump it.

Phil,

great idea! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif

Chris, Thanks again for all the info.

Ron, I'm just sitting here weeping! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/sad.gif

Well... It looks like my best hope is for a ROMAK-3/SSG-97, a Hyundai compared to a Ferrari http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

On the bright side, I just put another hundred rounds through my PK souped up 27A1.

The PK modified flat ejector is still throwing the empties out, and looks good as new for the wear!

Best to all, Zamm
