It's Official - I Am Now A Tommy Gun Owner

Recommended Posts

It runs great, dumped three 30 rounders thru it with out a hic up. I will fire a drum thru it tonight. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/cool.gif I believe this is the best investment piece I have bought, with the asking prices of the WH guns being 16K; this is up considerably from 7months ago http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

I still am waiting on the Savage 28 that I bought from LJ Warren. I have toyed with the idea of selling one or the other when this gun transfers.

Here is my dilemma, I like the look of the blued WH and if I keep it I will send it to PK and turn it into a 1921A clone (no comp). I like the fact that it "looks" like an original Colt gun and would go well with my Greg Williams FBI case. But the Savage 28 is a C&R WWII piece and has history and doesn’t need a thing done to it.

I dont "need" two Thompson 28's, What would you guys do????? http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/dry.gif

You've waited 7 months so obviously your a patient man, and you had better be if you send it off to PK for some work. He usually has a long backlog of work and some people have waited a year or more to get their guns back. So you better keep both if you want to able to shoot for the next year. Look at it this way, in a year's time if you decide to sell one, it's more than likely that you'll get more $$$$ for it. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif

gunrunner--

I am smiling for you, because I know how good it feels. I agree with the others. If you don't need the money right off, keep them both. I don't think there is a better place to park some money for awhile. If you absolutely have to get your money back on one, I certainly see the dilemma. On one hand, you are looking for that certain look and on the other you have a GI original. Apparently the Colt look is really important to you, and it appears that you enjoy the prospects of making a project of this. However, since the antique value is more of an issue for me, I would personally go for the Savage. It comes down to personal objectives.

What do you mean you don't "need" two 28's? Of course you do.

What took 7 months? How long did our Fed friends have the paperwork?

Who was your examiner?

Congrats on the new toy. Everybody needs new toys now and again.

It's kind of like collecting Barbie dolls-- not that I've ever done that.

QUOTE (Roland @ Headless Thompson Gunner,Sep 14 2005, 04:19 PM)

What took 7 months?  How long did our Fed friends have the paperwork?

Who was your examiner?

After being 3 1/2 months into the transfer I received a letter saying my transfer was incomplete and that they needed more information. They were right I forgot to write in USA on the paper where you declare yourself an US citizen, they only have about six others of these on file for me http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/mad.gif.

Another month goes by and they say that they have nothing pending on this gun and that we need to resubmit the information http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/sad.gif . About two months later the paper work comes thru only on the original that we sent in, go figure http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/blink.gif.

Time Line:

3/18/05 mailed

4/27/05 dated by feds on the back

6/30/05 rec incomplete info notice

8/19/05 dated by feds on the back?

8/30/05 approved by Sandra Snook

So I guess this would be a 5 1/2 month transfer instead of 7 http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/cool.gif .

Now to report on the "drum dumps". All of my drums have been to see Merle Bitikofer. All run great starting with the Bridgeport L drum, then the new Kahr and last but not least the WH C drum http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

I then took it apart for a good cleaning, only to find out it had all of the original parts, except the bolt. Is this common? The breech oilier was either gone or they never had them in the WH guns, does anyone know?

I put it back together with all NOS Savage parts including nickel bolt and also put the breech oilier in it. I also took the aluminum piece out of the WH butt stock and replaced it with GI steel.

The only other thing I wanted to do was replace the "full auto" selector paddle, the one that is on there is slightly "discolored" almost like a light purple http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/blink.gif. And the magazine catch lever is out from the frame a little so that when you turn the fire control lever it hits the knurled part of the magazine catch. All of this is cosmetic but I am kind of anal about that kind of stuff http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/smile.gif

I have said all of this to ask a simple question, is their anyone that can blue an original GI lower to match the WH blue? http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/dry.gif I think this is a better option than just replacing parts on the WH lower than the lower would be NOS as well.

Thanks gunrunner

Many of the WH guns were missing the oiler. That was their way of saving money. For about $25 you can find one.

Congratulations on getting through the NFA gauntlet. All indications are that the new WV staff is truly dedicated to getting the system working properly- we are all excited to see what the next few months will bring.

The GI frame can be reblued to match the WH receiver, but it is often better to do both together, insuring a uniform color and polish. Mike is right about the missing breech oilier.

Quote MikeHammer: "and you had better be if you send it off to PK for some work. He usually has a long backlog of work and some people have waited a year or more to get their guns back"

I feel compelled to address the comment quoted above.

I am very uncomfortable having anyone’s gun even 6 months, and will stop taking work if I believe I can’t deliver in 8 at the most. While it true that the guns I am currently working on have been here a little less than a year, I don’t recall ever taking longer than this.

I recently sent an open letter to my current customer list advising of a significant loss of schedule due to major upgrades being required to the finishing phase of operations. This was a comprehensive reorganization requiring not only new equipment, but a building to house it. This requirement was not expected and like most of such events, couldn’t have come at a worse time. Because much of the work was done by myself, the impact on the schedule was about 2 months.

Everything is online again and better than ever. Work is progressing more quickly and current projections show to have the back log down to a reasonable level by the 2nd quarter of next year, if not earlier.

Most have been very understanding and I have appreciated that very much.

While I am very aware of, and concerned about, the time it takes to perform my duties, my foremost commitment continues to be the very best quality. While my practice is broad, I offer the most comprehensive service available for the Thompson, especially the unique problems of the WH models, and will not compromise a good job for the schedule. The time one is separated from his treasure is quickly forgotten if the results are satisfying and last a lifetime.

Respectfully and gratefully submitted.

Tell me anything in the NFA world that happens quickly. Except for the expenditure of money and ammunition.

I just received several parts back from PK and am very pleased with the results. It's been said here before that his work is superb and well worth the wait and I totally agree. We are one patient bunch to endure the wait for simple approvals from the BATFE so to wait for quality work such as PK's goes with the territory. I know of no one who is unhappy with the results.

Thanks Paul and looking forward to the new barrels.

Chuck
