JTinIN Posted September 1, 2004 Report Share Posted September 1, 2004 The M1 TSMG looking at getting has the rear sight covering part of the top logo and the sight with wings is held on with spot welds (at least they looked like spot welds). Is this something that was most likely done during a US Army rebuild or something that someone did later? In which case is repair a cost effective option or should one just pass and move on (trading a few items off, so can not realy reverse the process ...) PK. Posted September 1, 2004 Report Share Posted September 1, 2004 I have never seen a welded on sight and am sure the military never did such a thing. That doesn’t mean some one at some time didn’t do it, but “spot welding†(electric resistance welding) is not something most folks have access to. I would guess that a close examination will reveal that you are really seeing rivets with flat or slightly dished heads. It should be no closer than about 7/16" to the front of the rear sight base. Sounds as though the sight got moved a bit forward before it was reattached. Photos would be helpful . . . Was not able to get photos when first looked at the gun (was at a show and did not have the camera), however, hope to get Brickyard to take a look at the M1 also, and take a few dozen photos (Thinking will have to start a subdomain with Thomson photos at the Indiana State Sub-Machinegun Champinship webpage. Appreciate everyone's help and assistance. - Sept 4th. ** Was able to take a quick look (will see later if any of the photos are ok) and as everyone expected the rear sight is rivieted. Also got to take apart a Thomson for the first time, works well. Friend of mine was saying should ask around to see if anyone had the matching lower s/n ... would appear to be a very long shot in the dark.
