1921a Colt Thompson

Thank you in advance for your time.

I am looking at 2 Colt Thompsons both are 1921A models in approximately the same condition.

One in the 4000 range. The other in the 12,000 range.

 

For a long term investment, which one would be considered more unique?

The 4000 because of the lower number?

The 12,000 because of a high number and is an original 1921A (documented history on both guns)

 

Or...Makes no difference, based all on "condition only"??

Condition trumps all other considerations. As far as the serial numbers, the 4000 range low number isn't low enough for consideration and the 12000 range higher number isn't high enough to warrant any extra notice. What is the type of documentation history that you refer to?

Just tracing history.

These were prison guns, the paperwork traces them from when purchased by the state prison system (late 1920's) to when they were sold in the early 1970's.

Nothing really special, other than they are Colt 1921A models.

Average condition 80-85%

Wood has been replaced with another original Colt Wood set with anchor.

Original Colt Wood has a lot of Rack Wear and dings.

Not to encourage the NFA greed along, but an advertised 85% Colt 28 Navy with a Colt numbered L drum, a Colt NO: L drum, and a WH L & C drum, and repro hardcase was listed on the NFA boards for only 2 days before being sold. It wouldn't be a stretch to assume it sold for the advertised price of ............$25K!!!!!

 

I forgot the best part. It had incorrect wood and barrel, but the seller said he did have a "new" Colt barrel and comp. Where he found a new barrel is anyone's guess.

If one could pick up a 1921A for $12K one would have done VERY well.
