Sgt Posted February 7, 2004 Report Share Posted February 7, 2004 I wonder if anyone is familiar with the ranges in East Tenn., either Johnson City or Knoxville area? I am looking for a good outdoor range for when I get my Thompson. I've asked a lot of people at the local gun shows and they don't seem to know. Do you think I should first get something official in writing, or should I just show up at one of the local ranges and just start auto shooting? Any thoughts. Thanks! Also, ya might mail Chris Anderson? Not speaking for him by any means but, while he's in the western part of KY, he may know of some friends in the east that may have a clue. Where's Camden, TN? Near Nashville? I know there's a shoot there in March. If you need more poop I'll try to dig some up. It may be a starting place? Good luck. Sgt Posted February 7, 2004 Author Report Share Posted February 7, 2004 Hey guys-- Thanks for the great replies. I spoke with the lady who operates Point Blank, and she said MGs are welcome there. That would be my last alternative, however, because I really prefer shooting outside. You guys have reaffirmed my feelings also, about getting permission first, before blasting away. I have friends who say don't worry about it, just do it. I never did feel comfortable with that response, and I've got too much invested to be as caviler as my friends. I appreciate all the info; I'm just getting things ready now, because I expect to get my piece soon. Brickyard-- If you get a chance, I would like more info on the Camden shoot. Thanks! If you cone down some weekend i will let you shoot my thompson so maybe the time will seem to pass a little quicker!! I don't know what the policy would be to shoot just anywhere. My next step will be the contact the Forest Ranger. USMC-- I will take you up on that offer. Chattnooga is a realistic distance for me for an occasional outing. Junglewalk-- Yea, the transfer is now in, but I'm recovering from a broken leg. A friend and I plan a trip to Knoxville next week to pick it up. Yipppeeee!!! Isn't fate strange? I get the phone call from the dealer, two days after I broke my leg. catnipman Posted February 8, 2004 Report Share Posted February 8, 2004 Contacting a CNF ranger is a good idea. I did that before I started shooting my TSMG in Roosevelt National Forest here in Colorado. I made friends with the chief law enforcement official for RNF, and he always has a standing invitation to stop by and unload a few magazines if he's in the area and hears me shooting. The basic rules for shooting in a NF are: "You may NOT discharge a firearm or any other implement capable of taking human life, causing injury, or damaging property: In or within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site, or occupied area, Across or on a Forest Development road or a body of water adjacent thereto, In any manner or place whereby any person or property is exposed to injury or damage as a result of such discharge. (36CFR 261.10d*)." So, safety is the number one issue. Plus you don't want to leave a mess behind.
