StrangeRanger
I'd consider the high rate of fire on the Sphagin is a detriment. It takes away the advantage of the increased magazine capacity of the drum by using up the bullets twice as quickly. I don't think hard object penetration is nearly as important as stopping power and the 9 Para makes a bigger hole with a heavier bullet. I'll still take my TSMG M1
huggytree
i think his accuracy test is 100% him being a crappy shooter id be curious of which round is a better killer. id think the stronger russian round would be better getting through heavy winter clothes, etc at close range of 15-25 yards i think the speed of the ppsh would be good too. ive shot a 9mm ppsh and found it extremely enjoyable. id be happy with either in ww2. I think both are easy to be a good shooter very quickly without having to learn how to be a good shooter..give a guy 10 minutes with a mp40 and he will be able o use it well
Mongo
Test are not realistic for determining a result for a battle weapon. I agree he can't shoot an open bolt SMG that has no selector worth a damn.
johnsonlmg41
Two radically different guns. IMO the ppsh wins out in my personal experience. 7.62 is a very potent round. I've yet to install the 9mm conversion, but I'm sure that would tame it down quite a bit. There's a reason they banned the steel core 7.62 ammo. Penetration is key in a self defense situation. Many Americans cling to the mythical stopping power of the .45. Before I watch any "review" I always keep in my mind that the reviewers never own, or have much time with the guns, (excluding MG Mike of course), same goes for most book authors, so watching is mostly for entertainment value, then I'm never disappointed. maxfaxdude
PPSH all the way...unrefined weapon, but reliable and the 7.62 x 25 is one small but nasty round.
GaryKeim
Battle scenario matters a little bit. If I was in a vehicle, armored or otherwise, an MP-40, M3A1, etc. Maybe even a Thompson.
1gewehr
MP40 would be my choice. PPSh drums are very easily damaged and often have to be finagled to work in a particular gun. Ejection straight into your face is not conducive to accurate shooting, either. At least if you try to fire from anything but a high shoulder position. The high rate of fire is not a plus in my mind. And the 7.62 round only has excellent penetration at close range. It quickly runs out of steam at longer ranges. I have not heard complaints about the 9mm not having adequate penetration from a SMG barrel.
RogerD
I have found my MP40 surprisingly accurate at 25 yards while stabilized particularly firing single shot. When loading a Suomi drum, if the ammo is set out for optimum loading, I insert 4 rounds at a time. Its full in a little over a minute.
