MP40 receiver with parts added

I was looking to buy an MP40, someone contacted me. When he bought it, it was in bad shape.. receiver was kept as per atf requirements.. added rest of parts from a kit.. hence it's not matching. How badly will this affect the value? How bout reliability ?

Registered receivers that are restored with vintage production parts to live function have considerably less value than all matching, excellent examples, as might be expected. There are lots of MP40s that meet this description. Mismatched parts is not a guarantee of poor function. Most function problems are mag related, with bad extractors another source of problems and sometimes ejectors, recoil springs, etc. All depends on the type of malfunction, and, anyway, anything and everything can be repaired, which is one bright spot with mismatched guns. Repair, if needed, can be undertaken with little loss of value.

Parts are increasingly expensive so that is one consideration. As time goes by more parts will be reproduced, a boon to shooter grade smgs that see a lot of use. High condition ollector quality guns will tend to be shot infrequently if at all.

There are an increasing number of MG buyers who want shiney, new looking MGs, even if they are mismatched and who don't really care if the weapon has been extensively refinished, etc. Buying a shooter grade MP40 and improving its cosmetics can be a profitable endeavor when you sell the gun. Buyers are more disinclined to buy scruffy looking MGs even to save some money and even if they are matching. Seem to be more and more buyers who want the MG to look 'new' regardless of other attributes.

I recently assisted an owner in selling a C+R MG42 that had been refinished and and looked really good, which sold at a price level with an excellent 90% plus finish MG42. without the reblue, the gun would have brought 75% of what it sold for.

Shop around and check prices of other MP40s offered and look at their overall conditions and see how the askng price compares to the gun you are asking about.

The guy I know wants 15,000 for it.. Not sure if I can justify that price,, it's in good shape, but it's basically missing "half" it's history..

It seems to me you could find a good but non matching C&R gun for that money. I assume you meant the receiver was cut per ATF requirements? Edited March 22, 2017 by Junkhunter
